Chapter 13

The criminal cases took nearly a year.
Seraphina eventually accepted a plea resolving the child-abuse conduct, theft of private documents, and her role in the coercive scheme.
Felix reached a separate agreement involving forgery-related conduct and cooperation.
Neither received the cartoon punishment gossip expected.
There was prison time.
Financial penalties.
Restitution.
Protective orders.
Permanent restrictions preventing Seraphina from contacting Anouk.
Civil judgments addressed additional damages.
Maximilian did not ask for special treatment.
He also did not ask prosecutors to destroy her.
Claire reminded him:
“You do not get to decide the sentence.”
“I know.”
“That sounded almost healthy.”
“Don’t ruin it.”
The legitimate Rourke companies survived the independent review.
Not untouched.
Two executives were removed.
Several old vendor relationships were terminated.
One regulatory settlement cost millions.
A development project collapsed after financing delays.
Maximilian lost money.
He also lost direct control over part of the business structure.
Independent directors gained permanent authority.
Five years earlier he would have called that defeat.
Now he slept better.
The broader family reacted badly.
Some relatives blamed Seraphina.
Others blamed Maximilian for opening the records.
Vincent blamed both.
Anouk cared about none of it.
She cared that her father now texted the lake-house nanny when his return time changed.
She cared that he called every night during business travel.
She cared that the main mansion’s storage door had been removed.
Eventually she agreed to return there.
The first time she entered the main hall, she stopped beneath the stairs.
Maximilian stood several feet behind her.
He did not tell her it was safe.
He let her decide.
Anouk walked toward the opening.
Looked inside.
Then backed away.
“Can we put shoes there?”
Maximilian almost laughed.
“All the shoes?”
“No.”
She thought.
“Boots.”
“Boots it is.”

The space became ordinary storage again.
That was more healing than sealing it forever.
