Chapter 10

Clarice had not pushed Agnes simply to become queen of the family table.

That was the major twist.

She pushed her because Agnes was finally about to undo twelve years of silence.

The “chair” mattered because Agnes’s matriarch vote controlled the warehouse sale.

The warehouse sale mattered because it would erase or scatter records connecting Clarice to old laundering channels, related-party vendor payments, and Michael’s final suspicions.

The secret mattered because Agnes had discovered pieces of that truth years earlier and hidden them to protect Dominic from the federal consequences tied to the same family businesses.

The first clue was Agnes saying Clarice wanted “my chair at the family table.”

The second was the Bellwether sale Clarice desperately needed approved.

The third was Agnes’s cooperation with prosecutors before the banquet.

The fourth was Clarice’s attempt to manufacture medical language removing Agnes’s authority.

The fifth was Agnes’s terror when Michael’s old records surfaced.

Clarice’s plan had layers.

If Agnes approved the Bellwether sale, Clarice earned millions and the warehouses disappeared into redevelopment.

If Agnes refused, Clarice would push incapacity.

If Agnes became too dangerous, an “accident” on the staircase could be framed as frailty.

If Dominic retaliated violently, Clarice could say the entire investigation was a mafia family power struggle.

And if Agnes spoke publicly, Clarice could destroy her morally.

“You knew after Michael died.”

“You stayed silent.”

“You protected Dominic.”

“You sat at the family table for twelve years while pretending to be innocent.”

Clarice was right about one thing.

Agnes was not innocent.

She had accepted protection from a criminal family.

She had hidden records.

She had delayed truth.

But Clarice misunderstood what had changed.

Agnes no longer needed to look innocent.

She needed to become useful.

By cooperating, surrendering documents, and admitting her own silence, Agnes made herself harder to blackmail.

That was why Dominic’s line mattered.

“Then start talking before she does.”

For once, Dominic understood the power shift before Clarice did.

The first person to tell the truth would control less of the family image.

But more of the legal reality.

Agnes spoke first.

And Clarice lost the secret she believed could protect her.
