Chapter 11

Clarice was arrested two weeks later.

Not for Michael’s murder.

Investigators still did not have enough for that.

She was arrested for the staircase assault, elder endangerment, obstruction, witness intimidation, financial crimes connected to the Bellwether transaction, and false documentation related to the attempted incapacity campaign.

Her lawyers attacked Agnes immediately.

Agnes was old.

Guilty.

Self-protective.

A cooperating witness trying to save Dominic.

Parts of that were true.

Prosecutors did not pretend otherwise.

They corroborated.

Emails.

Bank records.

Medical-letter drafts.

Security footage.

Consulting agreements.

Warehouse archives.

Clarice’s own messages.

The case did not depend on Agnes being pure.

It depended on Agnes finally being specific.

The federal investigation expanded into the Falcone businesses.

Dominic entered negotiations.

He did not receive a heroic exemption because his mother was pushed.

He had run criminal operations.

He had benefited from intimidation.

He had allowed legal businesses to remain entangled with illegal money even while claiming to clean them.

Eventually, Dominic entered a plea to racketeering-related financial offenses and obstruction tied to older conduct.

The sentence was substantial.

Less than it might have been because he cooperated in separating legitimate assets and preventing witness intimidation.

Still prison.

Still public.

Still real.

The independent fiduciary sold some businesses, restructured others, and shut down companies that could not be cleaned.

Employees with no criminal role were protected where possible.

Some lost jobs anyway.

That was part of the harm families like the Falcones created.

Crime did not stay neatly inside criminal rooms.

It reached cooks, drivers, bookkeepers, and children applying for scholarships from foundations funded by dirty money.

Agnes testified in a wheelchair.

Not for effect.

Because stairs had become difficult after the fall.

May you like

Clarice refused to look at her.

Agnes spoke anyway.
