Chapter 1 - The Fever in the Storm

The relentless winter storm raging over New York threw heavy gusts of snow against the arched stained-glass windows of the Moretti estate. Inside the grand foyer, the air smelled of polished mahogany, expensive leather, and quiet, terrifying authority.

Hannah Carter stepped through the heavy oak front doors, shivering violently under her worn winter coat. Beneath the faded jacket, she wore a modest black-and-white housekeeping uniform—the attire of a woman who worked sixteen-hour shifts just to afford formula and rent. Clutched tightly against her chest was eight-month-old Lily. The baby’s pale-yellow floral dress and white tights offered little warmth against the freezing blizzard outside.

Lily was trembling weakly, her cheeks flushed bright red, her large expressive eyes glazed over with a burning fever.

Hannah adjusted the soft blanket around her daughter, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She was three minutes late for her evening shift. In the world of the Moretti family, mistakes were not tolerated. Bringing a child into the private residence of the city's most feared syndicate boss was ground for immediate dismissal—or worse.

Footsteps echoed from the top of the grand marble staircase.

Victor Moretti descended the stairs with slow, deliberate grace. At forty-two, the head of the New York underground possessed a presence that commanded instant silence. Tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular, he wore an immaculate fitted black three-piece suit over an open-collar black shirt. Elaborate dark tattoos trailed along his neck and hands, contrasting sharply with his fair skin, sharp blue-gray eyes, and light stubble.

Victor stopped halfway down the sweeping staircase. His sharp blue-gray eyes locked onto the unfamiliar bundle resting in Hannah's arms.

Hannah froze in terror. She backed up against the cold stone doorframe, her knuckles turning white as she hugged Lily closer.

Victor walked down the remaining steps, his leather soles clicking against the marble floor. His expression was cold, unreadable, and intimidating. He stopped two feet from Hannah, his massive frame looming over her.

He looked down at the shivering infant. Slowly, Victor reached out his broad, tattooed hand. His long fingers gently touched the baby’s burning forehead.

The moment his skin made contact with the infant's intense heat, Victor’s cold, intimidating posture vanished. A look of fierce, unexpected urgency flooded his sharp features.

Victor turned his head slightly toward the shadow near the arched hallway.

"Call my doctor," Victor commanded, his deep voice slicing through the quiet hall like a blade.

Hannah looked up at him, completely stunned, her breath catching in her throat.
