Chapter 2 - The Engraved Crest

Ten minutes later, the master study was bathed in the warm light of a roaring marble fireplace. Dr. Adrian Cole, Victor’s private physician, leaned over a plush leather sofa, carefully examining eight-month-old Lily with a stethoscope.

Hannah stood beside the sofa, her hands trembling as she adjusted Lily’s thick wool blanket to keep her warm. Victor stood three feet away near his broad mahogany desk, his black suit jacket unbuttoned, his intense blue-gray eyes fixed entirely on the infant.

Standing by the heavy study doors was Marcus Hale, Victor’s forty-five-year-old security chief. Dressed in a crisp black suit with a discreet earpiece, Marcus scanned the room with disciplined, watchful eyes.

"The fever is high, but we caught it in time," Dr. Cole said softly, preparing a mild pediatric dose to break the heat. "She needs rest and hydration."

Hannah let out a long, breathless sigh of relief, leaning down to adjust the collar of Lily's pale-yellow floral dress.

As she shifted the cotton fabric, a small silver locket slipped out from beneath the baby's collar, resting softly against her chest.

Victor caught sight of the tarnished metal.

He froze mid-step. His sharp blue-gray eyes widened in utter disbelief. He reached his hand toward the silver locket, his broad fingers hovering inches from the chain, before stopping himself completely.

For five agonizing seconds, the powerful mafia boss stood motionless in his own study.

Victor slowly extended his hand again, using two fingers to turn the silver locket over in the firelight. Engraved on the worn back casing was a distinct crest—a crown resting over a rising phoenix surrounded by intricate vines.

Victor’s face lost all color. The cold confidence that governed New York’s underground vanished into stark, pale shock.

"Where did you get this?" Victor asked, his voice stunned, barely above a whisper.

Hannah pulled Lily closer into her arms, her brown eyes filled with cautious fear.

"It belonged to my mother," Hannah answered softly. "Elena Rossi."
