Chapter 10 - A Shield of Steel

The golden light of dawn broke over the Hudson River, casting a warm, amber glow across the snow-covered cliffs.
Inside the quiet living room of the lodge, the fire crackled softly.
Hannah sat on the sofa, watching the sunrise over the river. Eight-month-old Lily was fast asleep in her lap, her pale-yellow dress neat, her rosy cheeks warm and healthy, her small silver locket safely back around her neck.
Victor walked over, wearing a clean white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, displaying his dark wrist tattoos. He carried a silver tray with warm tea and fresh pastries, setting it on the table before her.
"How is she?" Victor asked softly, looking down at his grand-niece.
"Her fever is completely gone," Hannah replied, a radiant, emotional smile touching her lips. "She’s sleeping like an angel."
Victor sat down beside them on the velvet sofa. He reached out his broad, calloused hand, gently smoothing the soft brown curls on baby Lily’s head.
"The Marcone syndicate has been dismantled," Victor revealed gently. "Thomas is in federal custody, and the Rossi foundation trust has been legally registered under Lily’s name. She is now the sole owner of the Rossi empire."
Hannah looked into her uncle's sharp blue-gray eyes, tears of profound relief welling in her eyes. "Victor... I don't know how to thank you. You saved my daughter's life. You gave us everything."
Victor reached out, placing his palm gently against Hannah's shoulder, holding her with the fierce, protective strength of a Don who had finally fulfilled his life's promise.
"You don't owe me anything, Hannah," Victor said softly, his deep voice resonant and sincere. "You are my blood. As long as I am breathing, you and Lily will never walk alone, never be afraid, and never lack a home again."
Hannah reached out, squeezing his broad hand tightly. "Family."
Down in Hannah's lap, little Lily stirred sleepily. She opened her large brown eyes, looking up at the towering mafia boss sitting beside her mother. The infant let out a sweet, innocent laugh, reaching both of her small hands up toward Victor’s face.
Victor let out a low, genuine laugh that filled the room with quiet warmth. He leaned down, letting the tiny infant pat his cheek with her small hands.
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the winter sun illuminated the snow-capped valley, bathing the riverfront lodge in brilliant golden light.

The shadows of betrayal were gone, the enemies defeated, and the Rossi lineage restored to power.
Yet as Victor looked out over the sparkling river, his blue-gray eyes held a sharp, vigilant fire—knowing that in a world of power and shadows, new storms would always rise on the distant horizon, and he would be standing ready as an unbroken shield of steel to protect his family forever.
