Chapter 10 - The golden handcuffs

The rain pounded against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Daniel Mercer’s private office in Manhattan. He stood facing the glass, looking out over the city he now entirely controlled. Morgan-Hayes was dismantled, Evelyn was safe and wealthy, and Celeste Morgan was rotting in a cheap apartment in Queens. He had fulfilled his promise to his mentor.
The heavy mahogany doors behind him opened. Mark, his trusted executive, stepped into the room, holding a secure encrypted tablet.
"Mr. Mercer," Mark said, his voice unusually tight. "We have a problem."
Daniel didn't turn around. He took a sip from a crystal glass of bourbon. "I don't do problems, Mark. Only solutions. What is it?"
"It's Celeste," Mark said, stepping closer. "Her ankle monitor just went dark. Federal Marshals arrived at her apartment ten minutes ago. It's completely empty. No forced entry. She's gone."
Daniel slowly lowered his glass. The rugged, calm demeanor vanished, replaced by a razor-sharp intensity. He turned around, his eyes locking onto Mark. "That's impossible. Her passport is seized. She has exactly zero dollars to her name. Who could possibly help her disappear?"
Before Mark could answer, the secure phone on Daniel’s desk began to ring. It was a solid black phone with no caller ID, a direct line reserved for only one person on earth.
Daniel stared at it. A cold, creeping realization began to spread through his chest. He walked slowly to the desk, picked up the receiver, and held it to his ear.
"I told you she was resourceful, Daniel," a smooth, British voice echoed through the speaker.
"What did you do, Silas?" Daniel demanded, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the phone. Silas wasn't just a private investigator. He was the head of operations for Vanguard. The whisper network was just a front.
"I secured an asset," Silas replied casually. "You did wonderful work, Daniel. You dismantled her empire perfectly. But you let your personal emotions blind you. You thought this was about justice for Arthur. This was always about the algorithm she hid inside Morgan-Hayes' servers. The one you failed to locate."
Daniel's jaw clenched. "She's a criminal. She'll stab you in the back the second she gets the chance."
"Oh, I'm counting on it," Silas chuckled. "That's why she's sitting across from me right now in London. We've given her a new desk. A new title. And a very specific target."
The line clicked, and a new voice came over the speaker. It was a voice Daniel hadn't heard since the rooftop, dripping with glamorous, sophisticated condescension.
"Hello, Daniel," Celeste purred softly into the phone.
Daniel didn't speak. He could practically see her, wearing a new designer gown, her fair skin glowing with renewed arrogance, sitting in a boardroom far beyond his reach.
"You thought you were the hunter," Celeste whispered, her voice laced with venomous triumph. "But you're just a dog on a leash. Vanguard owns us both now. And my first assignment as their new Director of Acquisitions..." She paused, letting the silence hang perfectly. "...is to liquidate your holding company. I'll see you soon, waiter."
The line went dead.
Daniel stood in the silent office, the rain hammering violently against the glass. He slowly placed the receiver back onto the cradle. He had spent twelve years building an empire to destroy a monster, only to realize he had just handed her the keys to a kingdom.

He looked down at his hands, then turned back toward the dark, stormy skyline. A slow, dangerous smile crept across his face.
"Good," Daniel whispered to the empty room. "I was getting bored."
