Chapter 8 - The quiet boardroom

The air in the sterile holding facility felt heavier after Daniel left. Celeste stared at the document, the harsh fluorescent lights buzzing aggressively above her. The paper was a binding legal agreement, acknowledging that she personally assumed liability for a thirty-million-dollar phantom debt tied to a shell corporation in the Cayman Islands.

If she signed it, Daniel promised to hand over the mechanic's burner phone to her lawyer, effectively destroying the prosecution's star witness for the attempted murder charge. She would still lose the company and face financial ruin, but she wouldn't spend the rest of her life in federal prison.

Her hand trembled as she picked up the cheap plastic pen Daniel had left behind. She had spent her entire adult life clawing her way to the top, crushing anyone in her path. Now, the apex predator of Wall Street was forcing her to put her own neck into a noose.

She signed her name. The signature was messy, a far cry from the bold, confident loops she used to authorize multi-million dollar acquisitions.

Two days later, the attempted murder charges were mysteriously dropped due to "lack of credible evidence." The financial fraud charges stuck, but her high-priced legal team managed to negotiate a brutal plea deal: house arrest, complete asset forfeiture, and a lifetime ban from holding an executive position in any financial institution.

Celeste was escorted back to Morgan-Hayes headquarters one last time to formally surrender the company's proprietary keys.

She walked into the main boardroom, flanked by two federal officers. The room, which used to be her absolute domain, now felt like a mausoleum. Sitting at the head of the massive oak table was Daniel Mercer, looking relaxed in a dark tailored suit. Beside him sat Evelyn Hayes, reviewing a stack of digital tablets.

No one spoke as Celeste entered. She walked slowly to the opposite end of the table, her ankle monitor chafing against her leg. She unclipped a heavy ring of encrypted drives from her belt and slid them across the polished wood.

Daniel stopped them with one hand.

"Thank you, Celeste," he said, his voice entirely devoid of the anger he had shown in the jail cell. It was cold business now.

"I signed your paper, Mercer," Celeste spat, trying to salvage a shred of her dignity. "I took the debt. You got your revenge. Now tell me who I owe this thirty million to."

Daniel looked at Evelyn, who didn't look up from her tablet. He then looked back at Celeste, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table.

"You don't owe it to anyone, Celeste," Daniel said quietly.

Celeste frowned, her perfectly arched eyebrows drawing together in confusion. "What do you mean? The shell corporation..."

"Belongs to me," Daniel finished, a cruel, triumphant smirk finally breaking across his rugged face. "There was no dangerous secret partner. Arthur never owed anyone a dime. I fabricated the debt using the same offshore loopholes you used to hide your stolen money."

The room spun. Celeste grabbed the back of a leather chair to steady herself.

"You... you forged a debt?" she stammered, her mind racing to comprehend the scale of the manipulation.

"You assumed liability for a massive, unpayable debt to my holding company," Daniel explained smoothly, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Which means, according to the terms you just signed in federal custody, my company now legally owns whatever is left of your future earnings, your real estate, your patents, and your personal estate. Forever."

He had tricked her. He had used her terror of prison to force her to sign away her entire existence.

"That's illegal!" she screamed, her voice cracking. "That's extortion! The courts will tear that contract apart!"

"Good luck proving it without any money to hire a lawyer," Evelyn finally spoke, her voice laced with pure ice. She looked up, staring directly into Celeste's panicked eyes. "You took everything from my family, Celeste. Now, Daniel has taken everything from you."

Daniel picked up the encrypted drives, slipped them into his pocket, and walked toward the door.

"Enjoy the house arrest, Celeste," Daniel said over his shoulder. "Try not to get too used to the penthouse. The bank forecloses on it tomorrow morning."
