Chapter 3 - The morning after

The corporate headquarters of Morgan-Hayes Financial was usually a hive of aggressive energy by eight in the morning. Today, it felt like a graveyard.

Celeste stepped off the elevator on the top floor, clutching her designer handbag like a shield. She had barely slept, her mind racing through loopholes, legal clauses, and escape routes. But nothing could protect her from the reality of what had happened on the rooftop. Daniel Mercer, the apex predator of Wall Street, now owned her life.

She walked into her massive corner office, desperate for the familiar comfort of her mahogany desk and panoramic views. Instead, she stopped dead in her tracks.

The office was completely empty. The desk, the leather chairs, the abstract art—everything was gone. In the center of the vast, bare room sat a cheap, gray metal folding table and a single, uncomfortable plastic chair. On the table was a massive stack of dusty, yellowing banker's boxes.

Daniel stepped out of the shadows near the window, holding a cup of black coffee. He was no longer dressed as a waiter. He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that emphasized his imposing, masculine frame.

"Good morning," he said casually, taking a sip of his coffee.

"What is this?" Celeste demanded, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and fear. "Where is my furniture?"

"You don't need it for your new role," Daniel replied, leaning against the glass. "You're no longer the president, Celeste. You are now the junior archivist."

Celeste let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "You're insane. I'll quit. I'll walk out that door and let my lawyers tear you apart."

"If you quit, you forfeit the severance clause. And without that severance, you can't cover the margin calls on your personal offshore investments," Daniel said, his tone utterly flat.

Celeste’s face drained of color. Her rosy complexion turned an ashen white. Nobody knew about her offshore accounts. They were buried under four layers of shell companies.

"Sit down, Celeste," Daniel commanded. It wasn't a request.

She walked stiffly to the plastic chair and sat down, her diamond earrings suddenly feeling like lead weights. She looked at the dusty boxes in front of her.

"What are these?" she asked quietly.

"Those are the physical ledgers from twelve years ago," Daniel said, walking toward the door. "The year your former partner, Arthur Hayes, took his own life. The year you took over."

Celeste’s breath hitched in her throat. Her hands began to shake uncontrollably.

"I want every page audited by Friday," Daniel said without looking back. "If you miss a single discrepancy, I will freeze your assets before lunchtime."

As the door clicked shut, Celeste stared at the boxes. She knew exactly what was inside them. She knew the secret they held. And she realized, with a sickening drop in her stomach, that Daniel Mercer hadn't bought this company to make money. He had bought it to destroy her.
