Chapter 6 - The desperate flight

Inside the speeding black SUV, Hannah held Grace tightly against her chest, her heart hammering wildly. She was terrified. Silas was driving the vehicle recklessly through the winding, rain-slicked mountain roads behind the estate.

An hour earlier, Silas and three armed men had breached the bunker. They hadn't hurt her, but the cold, dead look in Silas’s eyes told her exactly what he planned to do once they were far enough away from Dominic’s protection.

Grace began to cry, frightened by the erratic movement of the car. Hannah rocked her gently, her beautiful face pale but fiercely determined. She scanned the interior of the SUV, looking for any possible escape. The child safety locks were engaged on the doors, and a thick glass partition separated her from Silas in the driver’s seat.

“You won't get away with this, Silas,” Hannah yelled through the intercom connecting the front and back of the vehicle. “Dominic will find you. He will kill you.”

Silas’s dark, cruel laughter echoed through the speakers. “Dominic is a fool, Hannah. He let his heart blind him. By the time he realizes the service roads are mined, I will be halfway to the border. Julian’s bloodline ends tonight, and the Caruso empire will belong to me.”

Hannah clutched the silver Saint Christopher medal around Grace’s neck, praying silently. She refused to be a victim. She looked at the heavy metal seatbelt buckle in her hand. It wasn't much, but it was all she had.

Suddenly, a blinding flash of headlights filled the rear window of the SUV.

Silas cursed loudly. Dominic’s armored sports car roared out of the rain, closing the distance at terrifying speed. Dominic was driving like a man possessed, his expensive car tearing through the dangerous mountain curves, completely ignoring the treacherous conditions.

Silas swerved hard, trying to run Dominic off the road. The vehicles collided with a deafening screech of metal. Hannah screamed, shielding Grace with her body as the SUV spun violently on the wet asphalt.

The SUV crashed through the wooden guardrail and slammed into a muddy embankment, coming to a violent halt.

Hannah was thrown against the door, her head striking the glass, but she kept her grip on her baby. She was dazed, her vision blurring, but the sound of shattering glass snapped her back to reality.

Dominic’s car had skidded to a stop blocking the road. Dominic kicked his door open and stepped out into the pouring rain. He didn't look like a refined billionaire anymore. He looked like the devil himself. The pouring rain soaked his white dress shirt and dark hair. He raised his weapon, aiming it directly at the driver’s side of the crashed SUV.

“Get out of the car, Silas!” Dominic roared over the thunder.
