Chapter 8 - The quiet aftermath

The following weeks brought a profound, sweeping change to the Caruso estate. Silas was handed over to the syndicate council for his treason, permanently removed from their world. The traitors within the ranks were purged, and Dominic solidified his power with an iron grip, ensuring no one would ever threaten his family again.
But the biggest change was not in the empire. It was inside the manor.
Hannah was no longer a guest hiding in the shadows. She walked the halls freely, her presence bringing a quiet, beautiful light to the cold marble fortress. The staff treated her with absolute respect, and Grace’s cheerful laughter echoed through the grand rooms, a sound that healed the deep wounds of Dominic’s grief.
One evening, Dominic invited Hannah to his private office. The room that had once terrified her now felt warm and familiar.
Dominic stood by the window, wearing a soft gray sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed and devastatingly handsome. He turned as she entered. Hannah wore a simple, elegant dark blue dress, her rosy cheeks glowing with health and happiness.
“You wanted to see me, Dominic?” Hannah asked softly.
Dominic walked over to his massive mahogany desk and picked up a sealed envelope. He walked over to her, his dark eyes filled with a deep, emotional weight.
“When my men cleared out Silas’s safe houses, they found this,” Dominic said quietly, handing her the envelope. “It’s a letter. Julian wrote it the night he died. He must have hidden it in his jacket, and Silas took it from the wreckage.”
Hannah’s breath caught. She took the envelope with trembling hands. She broke the seal and unfolded the crisp paper.
The handwriting was rushed, frantic.
If you are reading this, I am gone. Silas found out about the accounts. He’s coming for me. Dominic, my brother, I know you will find the truth. I have a daughter. Her name is Grace. Her mother is Hannah. They are innocent. They are my heart. Dominic, protect them. Shield them from our world. And if I am not there to love her, I ask you, my brother, to give her the family I never could.
Tears spilled over Hannah’s cheeks as she read the final words. Julian had known he was going to die, and his last thought had been to entrust her to the only man strong enough to keep them safe.
Dominic stepped closer, gently wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb.
“He trusted me with the most precious thing in his life,” Dominic whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. “And I will spend the rest of my life honoring that trust.”

Hannah looked up into his intense, beautiful dark eyes. “You already have, Dominic. You gave us a home. You gave us our lives back.”
“I want to give you more than that, Hannah,” Dominic said, stepping impossibly close, his powerful presence wrapping around her like a warm blanket.
