Chapter 2

The sudden crash in the hallway caused the armed guards stationed outside the grand parlor to flinch, their hands instinctively dropping to their holstered weapons. But before they could even identify the source of the noise, Emily was already moving.

Her eyes, usually downcast and deferential, were wide and burning with an intense, unyielding urgency. The quiet, invisible maid was gone. In her place was a woman moving with terrifying, calculated precision. She shoved violently through the heavy mahogany doors, her shoulder colliding hard into the chest of a two-hundred-pound mafia enforcer who tried to block her path.

"Hey! Get back to the kitchen!" the guard barked, grabbing her arm.

Emily didn't even look at him. She twisted her wrist, breaking his grip with a highly trained, flawless defensive maneuver, and shoved him backward into the doorframe.

"Move!" Emily commanded, her voice sharp, loud, and echoing with an absolute, unquestionable authority that made the seasoned enforcer freeze in his tracks.

She rushed into the chaotic, brightly lit room, her light blue maid uniform swishing around her legs as she bypassed the stunned medical personnel standing near the periphery. She dropped swiftly to her knees on the intricate Persian rug, sliding perfectly into the space directly opposite the lead paramedic and right beside Michael Carter.

Without a single moment of hesitation, she reached out her fair, steady hands. She gently, yet firmly, took the limp, blue-blanketed baby into her arms. She cradled Noah's fragile head against her chest, her dark hair falling loose from her messy bun as she leaned down and pressed a tender, agonizingly brief kiss to his cold, pale forehead.

The lead paramedic blinked, his broad face twisting into a mask of pure, stunned confusion. He looked at her white apron, her blue dress, and the way she was handling a deceased infant at a secured crime scene.

"Who the hell are you?" the lead paramedic demanded, his voice thick with stunned disbelief. "Put the infant down immediately! You are compromising a medical scene!"

Michael slowly lifted his head, his face a portrait of devastated despair. His eyes were red, his breathing shallow and erratic. He looked at the young woman who had quietly dusted his bookshelves for the past four months, now sitting on the floor clutching his dead son.

"Emily... get out," Michael whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, terrifying warning, though his body lacked the strength to enforce it. "Don't look at this. Put him down and get out."

Emily completely ignored the mafia boss. She laid Noah flat on the Persian rug, her eyes rapidly scanning the baby’s pale face, his bluish lips, and the scattered medical equipment around them. She looked at the defibrillator pads, the empty fluid bags, and finally at the portable cardiac monitor that was still drawing a flat, green line across its digital screen.

Her hidden medical instincts, buried under months of disguise, instantly took over.

"You pushed three rounds of epi," Emily stated, her voice fierce, rapid, and confident. "You shocked him twice at two joules per kilo. His core temperature was elevated from a viral fever, so you assumed septic shock and packed him in thermal warming blankets to preserve peripheral perfusion."

The lead paramedic stared at her, his jaw dropping slightly as the maid flawlessly recited advanced pediatric trauma protocols.

"The only person here," Emily continued, glaring fiercely at the paramedic, "who knows what you're missing."
