Chapter 7

The bright, artificial light of the chandelier illuminated the tense silence between them. Emily held her ground, her natural breathing steady despite the overwhelming, intimidating presence of the man standing inches from her face.
"It doesn't matter who I am, Mr. Carter," Emily replied, her voice steady, stripping away the submissive maid persona entirely. "What matters is that Noah is breathing. He will recover fully if the hospital follows the protocol I gave them."
"It matters to me," Michael countered, his blue eyes narrowing as they searched her face for any sign of deception. "You've been living under my roof for six months. You've dusted my shelves, served my meals, and stayed invisible. All while possessing the medical knowledge of a chief trauma surgeon. Why?"
Emily looked away, her slow eye movement betraying a deep, hidden exhaustion. "I needed a quiet place. A place where nobody asks questions. A place where the outside world doesn't look too closely."
Michael let out a low, acknowledging breath. "You chose the home of a mafia boss to hide?"
"People are too terrified of you to snoop around your household staff," Emily explained, looking back at him with restrained emotion. "Law enforcement avoids your property, and your enemies wouldn't waste time looking at a maid. It was the perfect camouflage."
"Was," Michael corrected sharply. "Until today. You blew your cover the second you touched that defibrillator. The paramedics saw you. My guards saw you."
"I know," Emily whispered, a flicker of genuine fear crossing her dark eyes for the first time. She took a small step backward, clutching the fabric of her white apron. "Which is why I need to pack my things. I have to leave tonight."
Michael’s hand shot out with blinding speed, his large, tattooed fingers wrapping firmly, but not painfully, around her upper arm, halting her retreat.
"You aren't going anywhere," Michael stated, his voice a low, immovable absolute.
"Let me go, Michael," Emily demanded, her voice rising with fierce urgency as she tried to pull away. "You don't understand. The people looking for me are dangerous. If they track the ambulance records or hear a rumor about a mystery doctor saving your son, they will find me. They will burn this mansion to the ground to get to me."
"Let them try," Michael sneered, his sharp jaw tightening with arrogant, lethal confidence. "I have an army at my disposal. No one breaches my gates without my permission."
"They aren't street thugs!" Emily yelled, her professional restraint finally shattering as she glared up at him. "They don't wear cheap suits and carry illegal guns. They wear federal badges, Michael. They are powerful enough to erase people from existence. You cannot protect me from them."
May you like
Michael did not release her arm. He stared down at her, his pale blue eyes burning with an intense, fierce possessiveness that had nothing to do with mafia territory.
"I own half the badges in this state," Michael whispered dangerously. "Sit down, Emily. You are going to tell me exactly who you are running from."
