Chapter 5

The high-pitched whine of the defibrillator charging filled the luxurious mansion room, overriding the erratic, jagged beeps of the monitor.

"Clear," Emily commanded, her voice absolutely steady.

Michael pulled his large, tattooed hands away from Noah’s airway, leaning back onto the Persian rug. The paramedic backed away. Emily placed the small pediatric paddles directly onto Noah's pale chest, pressing firmly against his fair skin.

She pressed the shock buttons.

The infant’s tiny body jolted upward off the fluffy blue blanket. Emily instantly removed the paddles, dropping them to the floor, and placed two fingers back onto the baby's neck. Her dark eyes darted to the cardiac monitor.

The jagged, chaotic waves on the screen paused for one agonizing, endless second. Then, a sharp, clean spike appeared. Followed by another.

Beep... Beep... Beep.

A steady, rhythmic sinus rhythm marched across the digital green screen.

Noah let out a sudden, sharp, sputtering gasp. His tiny chest expanded violently, pulling in a massive breath of air. His pale blue lips slowly began to flush with a faint, miraculous hue of pink. A weak, reedy cry escaped his throat, cutting through the heavy, stunned silence of the room.

Michael Carter stopped breathing. The terrifying mafia boss stared at his son, his pale blue eyes wide in absolute, breathless awe. He reached out with trembling fingers, lightly brushing Noah’s cheek, feeling the returning warmth of life beneath his skin.

"He's breathing," Michael whispered, his voice cracking, tears of profound relief falling freely down his face. "Oh my god. He's breathing."

The lead paramedic sat back on the floor, running a shaking hand over his face, utterly astounded. "That's impossible. We lost him. We legally lost him ten minutes ago."

"His heart rate is stabilizing at one-forty," Emily reported, her voice returning to a calm, clinical detachment. She reached for the fluffy blue blanket and wrapped it securely around Noah, preserving his newly restored core temperature. She lifted the crying infant and gently placed him into Michael’s large, waiting arms.

Michael pulled his son tight against his chest, burying his face in the blue blanket, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, overwhelming gratitude.

Emily stood up smoothly from the Persian rug. She smoothed down her white apron, adjusted the collar of her light blue uniform, and looked down at the medical team.

"He needs a pediatric intensive care unit immediately," Emily ordered, her fierce medical authority still radiating through the room. "He requires a continuous amiodarone drip and full electrolyte paneling to ensure the tachycardia doesn't rebound. Call Boston General. Tell them a VIP pediatric trauma is five minutes out."

"Yes, ma'am," the paramedic answered automatically, completely submitting to her command. He scrambled to his feet, gesturing for his team to bring the mobile stretcher.

Michael slowly stood up, holding his crying son securely against his unbuttoned white shirt. He looked at Emily. The devastating despair was gone from his face, replaced by a profound, piercing scrutiny. He watched the young maid who had just performed a miracle in his living room, his mind racing to comprehend the impossible reality standing before him.

"Emily," Michael said quietly, his voice carrying a heavy, undeniable weight.

Emily paused, refusing to meet his eyes. "The ambulance is waiting, Mr. Carter. You need to go with your son."
