Chapter 10 - a new beginning

Six months later.
The summer sun beamed down across the expansive gardens of the Moretti estate, bathing the green lawns and blooming hydrangeas in vibrant, golden light. A gentle breeze rolled off the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan, rustling the leaves of the weeping willows.
On the manicured lawn, a colorful picnic blanket was spread under the shade of a grand oak tree.
Lily, now twenty months old, was running through the grass in a bright yellow sundress, her soft auburn curls bouncing with every step. She let out a shriek of pure, unadulterated joy as she chased a butterfly toward the flowerbeds.
"Lily, don't run too fast, sweetie!" Emily called out with a warm, musical laugh.
Emily sat on the edge of the blanket, looking radiant and completely at peace. She wore a breezy white linen dress that complemented her rosy, glowing complexion and loose auburn hair. The exhaustion and fear that had once shadowed her eyes were entirely gone, replaced by a deep, luminous joy.
Standing a few yards away near the stone terrace was Marco, dressed in a casual polo shirt and sunglasses, watching over the perimeter with his usual vigilance, but his posture was relaxed, a faint smile playing on his rugged face as he watched the toddler stumble and giggle.
Suddenly, two large, strong hands gently rested on Emily’s shoulders from behind.
Emily tilted her head back, smiling as Vincent leaned down and kissed her forehead. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark tattoos along his wrists, and light gray trousers. He looked relaxed, powerful, and utterly content.
"How is my favorite artist today?" Vincent asked, sitting down beside her on the blanket and wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side.
"Inspired," Emily replied softly, leaning her head against his shoulder just as she had on the plane six months ago, but this time, there was no fear, no cameras, and no pretense. "The gallery downtown sold three of my landscape paintings this morning. They want a full exhibition for the autumn collection."
"I told you they would," Vincent said, pride ringing clear in his deep baritone voice. "Your talent was never the question. You just needed the peace to create."
"Dada!" a tiny voice squealed across the grass.
Vincent’s entire face transformed. The fearsome titan of the underworld, the man whose name commanded respect across entire states, melted into pure adoration.
Lily came charging across the lawn as fast as her little legs could carry her, clutching her favorite new toy—a large, soft white bunny that Vincent had personally commissioned for her first Christmas at the estate.
Vincent immediately extended his arms, catching the toddler mid-stride and scooping her high into the air. Lily erupted into a cascade of bubbling giggles as Vincent swung her gently before settling her onto his broad lap.
"Look at you, little runner," Vincent chuckled, tapping her nose playfully with his finger. "Did you catch the butterfly?"
"No fly!" Lily babble-giggled, wrapping her tiny arms around Vincent’s neck and pressing her sticky cheek against his dark stubble. "Bunny run!"
Emily watched them, her heart overflowing with a love so fierce and complete it took her breath away. She reached over, her hand resting over Vincent’s on Lily’s small back.
Vincent looked at Emily, his dark eyes filled with an unspoken promise that had been kept every single day since they stepped off that runway. The shadows of her past were buried forever. In their place stood an unbreakable fortress, guarded not by weapons or fear, but by the fierce, unyielding devotion of a man who had chosen to be their protector, their partner, and their home.
"Happy, Emily?" Vincent murmured, his hand lifting to tenderly cradle the side of her neck, his thumb caressing her soft jawline.
May you like
Emily leaned forward, pressing a sweet, lingering kiss to his lips while Lily happily waved her bunny between them under the bright summer sun.
"More than happy, Vincent," Emily whispered against his mouth, her eyes shining with pure light. "We’re finally safe."
