Chapter 5 - shadows at twilight

By seven in the evening, the brilliant afternoon sun had surrendered to a deep, sapphire-blue twilight across Lake Michigan. The waters rippled gently against the private shore, reflecting the warm amber lights illuminating the estate’s gardens.
Inside the suite, Emily had bathed Lily and fed her the warm organic porridge Clara had brought up on a silver tray. Exhausted from the day’s relentless terror, Lily had fallen asleep peacefully in the white crib, her tiny chest rising and falling in rhythmic tranquility, clutching the new yellow duckling in her arms.
Emily stood by the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows, having changed into a fresh silk blouse and tailored slacks that Clara had provided. She held a cup of chamomile tea, but her mind was miles away, replaying the terrifying sequence of events that had upended her life.
A soft knock sounded at the double doors.
"Come in," Emily said quietly.
The door opened, and Vincent stepped inside. He had changed out of his travel suit into a dark cashmere sweater and tailored charcoal trousers. The casual attire did nothing to diminish his commanding stature; if anything, the soft wool highlighted the broad width of his chest and the sharp, masculine line of his jaw.
He glanced toward the crib, his eyes instantly softening as he noticed Lily sleeping soundly. He kept his footsteps virtually silent as he approached Emily by the window.
"She sleeps deeply," Vincent murmured, standing beside her and looking out over the dark expanse of the lake.
"She’s exhausted," Emily replied softly, looking up at his sharp profile. "Children are resilient, but they absorb the tension around them. She knew something was wrong today."
"She will forget the fear," Vincent said gently. "Children only remember who made them feel safe."
Emily felt a sudden flutter in her chest at his words. She set her teacup down on the small marble console beside the glass. "Marco brought my luggage up earlier. He swept everything. Did he find any other trackers?"
Vincent nodded, his expression hardening slightly. "There was a second secondary transmitter woven into the lining of your leather handbag. A passive RFID chip. It only activated when pinged by high-frequency scanners."
Emily pressed a hand to her forehead, a cold shudder running through her veins. "Julian thought of everything. He didn't just want to frame me... he wanted to make sure they found me before I could ever reach an attorney."
"Julian is no longer an issue you need to fear directly," Vincent said, his voice completely calm.
Emily snapped her head up, her eyes wide. "What do you mean? What did you do?"
"Nothing that violates your principles, Emily," Vincent assured her, reading the panic in her expression. "I do not murder men out of convenience. However, my associates in Lisbon intercepted him as he stepped off a private charter four hours ago. He is currently in the custody of the Portuguese maritime authorities, facing forty-seven counts of international securities fraud and money laundering."
Emily let out a long, ragged breath, her knees trembling slightly. She leaned back against the window frame, processing the news. "He’s arrested? It’s over?"
"The threat from Julian is over," Vincent said, his tone darkening. "The threat from the people he robbed is not. The Salieris have partnered with an unsanctioned mercenary cell operating out of Montreal. The man in the black truck today was their vanguard. They know Julian is locked away in a European prison, which means you and Lily are now their only path to the money."
"Then what do we do?" Emily asked, desperation edging into her voice. "We can't hide in this house forever, Vincent. Lily needs a life. I need to be able to walk down a street without checking the rooftops for snipers!"
Vincent took a step closer. The proximity between them was intoxicating; she could feel the heat radiating from his broad chest, could see the tiny flecks of gold within his dark, piercing eyes.
"You will not hide," Vincent said, his voice low, firm, and filled with undeniable certainty. "Tomorrow evening, the Chicago Art Institute is hosting its annual charity gala. The entire social register of the Midwest will be in attendance. Politicians, federal judges, civic leaders... and the covert brokers who fund the northern syndicates."
Emily stared at him, confused. "You want me to go to a public gala? In the middle of an assassination manhunt?"
"I want you to walk through the front doors on my arm," Vincent corrected smoothly. "A woman hiding in a safehouse is a target. The companion of Vincent Moretti, standing in the center of high society surrounded by federal delegates, is untouchable. In our world, power is not maintained in the dark, Emily. It is asserted in the light."
"And Lily?" Emily asked, her voice cracking with maternal panic. "I am not leaving her!"
"Lily will remain here, guarded by Marco and forty armed men behind reinforced titanium blast shutters," Vincent replied without hesitation. "This house is a fortress. The gala is the theater. Tomorrow night, we show them that you are under the permanent protection of the Moretti family. Once that line is drawn, no one will dare cross it."
Emily looked into his eyes, searching for any hint of deceit, any sign that he was using her as bait. But all she saw was an iron will, a man who had chosen to stand between her and the storm, demanding nothing in return.
"Alright," Emily whispered, her heart racing against her ribs. "I’ll go with you."
May you like
Vincent offered a faint, breathtaking smile, his hand gently lifting to tuck a loose strand of auburn hair behind her ear. His fingers grazed her warm skin for a fleeting second, sending an electric jolt through her entire body.
"Get some rest, Emily," he said softly. "Tomorrow, Chicago will learn who you belong to."
