Chapter 4 - the sanctuary

The SUV turned off the public boulevard and entered a private, gated driveway nestled along the exclusive shoreline of Lake Michigan. Towering wrought-iron gates adorned with an intricate crest swept open automatically, closing behind the convoy with a heavy, magnetic click.

The estate was breathtaking. A majestic stone manor rose against the azure backdrop of the lake, surrounded by immaculate emerald lawns, weeping willows, and high stone security walls lined with discreet, state-of-the-art surveillance domes. It looked less like a criminal fortress and more like an old-world European sanctuary.

Gabriel brought the vehicle to a smooth stop in front of the grand entrance. Marco was already there, having arrived via a secondary route. He opened Emily’s door with a respectful bow of his head.

"Welcome to the Moretti residence, ma'am," Marco said, his gruff voice surprisingly gentle. "The perimeter is sterile. Nothing gets within two miles of this property without my clearance."

Vincent stepped out of the vehicle and immediately offered his hand to help Emily down. Emily accepted, her legs still feeling like water. She carried Lily securely in her left arm, her right hand resting within Vincent’s firm, calloused grip. His skin was warm, his fingers closing gently around hers to steady her balance.

As they walked up the broad stone steps, the heavy oak doors swung inward. An older woman with silver-streaked hair, dressed in a sharp, tasteful navy dress, greeted them with a warm, rosy-cheeked smile.

"Master Vincent," the woman said, her eyes immediately drifting to the baby in Emily’s arms. "The east wing guest suite has been prepared as requested. Fresh milk, organic baby puree, and clothes in the child's size are already arranged."

"Thank you, Clara," Vincent said, nodding. "Have the kitchen prepare a light lunch for Mrs. Carter. She has had a taxing morning."

"Right away, sir."

Clara stepped aside, leading the way through a cavernous entrance foyer lined with white Italian marble, gilded mirrors, and towering floral arrangements of fresh white roses and peonies. Natural light poured through enormous arched windows, illuminating the space with bright, cinematic warmth.

Emily looked around, dazed. "How did you manage to get baby clothes and supplies here before we even arrived?"

Vincent walked beside her, his hands resting easily in his slacks pockets. "Marco radioed ahead the moment we cleared the runway. Preparedness is not an option in my line of work, Emily. It is survival."

They reached the second floor, arriving at an expansive guest suite that took Emily’s breath away. The room featured high vaulted ceilings, a plush king-sized bed dressed in white Egyptian cotton, and a private balcony overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Michigan. In the corner stood a beautifully crafted white wooden crib, filled with soft, hypoallergenic blankets and several brand-new plush animals.

Lily immediately pointed her chubby finger at the crib. "Toys!"

Emily couldn't help but let out a soft, wet laugh, the first genuine emotion she had felt all day that wasn't rooted in absolute panic. She lowered Lily gently to the plush carpet. The toddler scampered over to the crib on unsteady legs, immediately picking up a soft yellow duckling and hugging it against her chest.

Vincent stood by the doorway, watching the child with an unreadable expression. For a man whose name struck fear across the eastern seaboard, his eyes held a profound, quiet stillness whenever he looked at the little girl.

"I need to make several calls," Vincent said, breaking the silence. "Clara will remain outside your door. You are safe here, Emily. Take a bath. Rest. We will talk about our next move this evening."

Emily walked toward him, Vincent’s suit jacket still draped over her cream blazer. She pulled the lapels tighter around herself, her expressive hazel-blue eyes locking onto his.

"Why are you doing this, Vincent?" she asked, her voice barely louder than a whisper. "You said yourself that fifty million dollars is on the line. Julian stole from your rivals. You could easily hand us over to trade for whatever leverage you want in New York. Why protect us?"

Vincent held her gaze. For a moment, the mask of the terrifying mafia boss slipped, revealing the man beneath—a man who had witnessed too much cruelty in his forty-one years and refused to let innocence be consumed by it.

"Because fifteen years ago, someone used a child to settle a debt in my family," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and painful it made Emily’s chest ache. "I swore that as long as I held power, no innocent life would ever be traded on my watch. You and your daughter are not leverage, Emily. You are my guests. And under my roof, you are untouchable."

He turned on his heel and walked down the marble hallway, leaving Emily standing in the golden sunlight of the suite, the lingering scent of his sandalwood cologne wrapping around her like an invisible vow.
