Chapter 3 - high-speed diversion

Emily moved on pure maternal adrenaline. The middle row of the custom SUV had a reinforced child safety latch built directly into the frame. She clicked Lily into the five-point harness, her hands steadying despite the terror surging through her veins.

"Mama?" Lily whined, sensing the sudden tension. The toddler reached out her tiny hands, clutching Emily’s blazer sleeve.

"Stay right here, baby. Mommy is right beside you," Emily whispered, stroking Lily’s soft cheek. The child’s rosy skin was radiant in the daylight, completely untouched by the violence gathering outside the heavy steel doors.

Up front, the driver, a stone-faced professional named Gabriel, adjusted his grip on the leather-wrapped steering wheel. "Rear vehicle reports contact. Sedan one is attempting a PIT maneuver on our flank."

Vincent leaned forward, his eyes fixed on the multi-angle camera feed embedded in the dashboard. "Execute protocol Delta. Do not fire. There are civilian vehicles within forty yards. Take the lower Wacker Drive bypass."

"Understood, sir."

The heavy SUV accelerated with an effortless surge of twin-turbocharged horsepower, the force pressing Emily back against the leather seat. Through the tinted rear glass, she saw the silhouette of a dark gray sedan lunging forward, attempting to wedge itself between Vincent’s vehicle and the trailing security SUV.

The lead security SUV suddenly swerved with calculated precision, its reinforced steel bumper delivering a controlled, crushing sideswipe to the gray sedan. Metal groaned against metal, sparks spraying across the asphalt like bright golden fireflies under the Chicago sun. The gray sedan spun violently, its tires smoking as it careened onto the shoulder and slammed into the concrete barrier, disabled but intact.

Emily gasped, covering her mouth with one hand while keeping the other firmly pressed against Lily’s chest. "My God..."

"Breathe, Emily," Vincent commanded softly, his hand briefly touching her shoulder. His touch was warm, solid, and surprisingly steadying. "No one enters this vehicle."

The second pursuing vehicle, a heavy black truck with tinted windows, didn’t back down. It surged forward into the gap, accelerating aggressively toward Vincent’s rear bumper as they descended into the shaded, subterranean tunnels of Lower Wacker Drive. The bright sunlight vanished, replaced by the flickering amber glow of overhead sodium lamps and concrete pillars flashing past at seventy miles per hour.

"Boss, the truck is trying to ram," Gabriel warned calmly, his knuckles white against the wheel. "He’s got heavy front plating."

Vincent reached into the compartment beneath his armrest, retrieving a compact communication unit. "Marco, where is the second intercept team?"

"Exiting Columbus Drive right now, Boss," Marco’s voice crackled through the speaker. "We have the intersection locked down."

"Box them in," Vincent ordered. "Gabriel, brake-check on the bridge transition. Three, two, one."

Gabriel slammed his foot on the brake pedal. The reinforced SUV’s advanced anti-lock systems engaged with surgical precision, stopping short by mere inches as the pursuing black truck attempted to veer left to avoid rear-ending them.

That split second was all Marco’s team needed.

From an adjacent side tunnel, two additional black SUVs surged forward in perfect synchronization, sliding across the lanes and forming an impenetrable iron wall across the roadway. The pursuing truck slammed on its brakes, tires screeching in a deafening crescendo, skidding to a halt just inches from the front grille of Marco’s vehicle.

Before the truck’s doors could even open, eight Moretti security officers surrounded the vehicle, weapons drawn but held low at tactical readiness, completely boxing the occupants inside.

Gabriel tapped the gas, accelerating Vincent’s SUV smoothly out of the tunnel and back into the dazzling afternoon light, leaving the confrontation behind in the shadows.

Emily sat trembling, her chest heaving as she pulled Lily close, checking every inch of her daughter’s body. Lily was wide-eyed, slightly startled by the sudden turns, but unharmed.

"Is it over?" Emily asked, her voice shaking as she looked across at Vincent.

Vincent adjusted his cuffs, his silver watch gleaming under the bright sky. Not a single dark hair was out of place; his charcoal suit remained immaculate. Only the cold, calculating fire in his eyes betrayed the violence that had just unfolded.

"That was a probing strike," Vincent said, leaning back into the leather cushions. "They wanted to test my response time. Now they know who they are dealing with."

"Who were they?" Emily asked, her voice rising with desperate frustration. "If they aren't Julian’s men, and they aren't the Salieris, then who wants us dead?"

"They don't want you dead, Emily," Vincent replied, his gaze locking onto hers with unnerving intensity. "If they wanted you dead, they would have used an anti-material rifle at the airport gate. They want you alive. You are the only person who can unlock Julian’s encrypted offshore vault."

Emily shook her head vigorously. "I told you, I don't know anything about offshore vaults! I was a high school art teacher before I had Lily! I don't understand cryptographic keys, I don't know where Julian hid the money, I don't know anything!"

"You don't need to understand it," Vincent said quietly. "Julian used biometric hashing."

Emily froze. "Biometric... what?"

"Your ex-husband was clever, but sentimental in the sickest way possible," Vincent explained, pointing toward Lily. "He didn't use a password. He split the master decryption key into two physical tokens. One is registered to your retinal scan. The other is registered to Lily’s unique genomic markers, stored in the cord blood banking facility he set up when she was born."

Emily felt the breath leave her lungs. The room seemed to spin. "He turned our daughter into a safe deposit key?"

"Yes," Vincent said, his voice laced with pure disgust. "Which means as long as you and Lily are breathing, you represent fifty million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds. And every syndicate from New York to Montreal is currently hunting you."

Tears finally broke past Emily’s defenses, spilling down her rosy cheeks. She bent over Lily, burying her face in her daughter’s small shoulder, her body shaking with silent sobs. She had spent a year trying to protect her baby from a bad marriage, only to realize she had brought her directly into a slaughterhouse.

A warm, heavy fabric settled gently over her shoulders.

Emily looked up through her blurred vision. Vincent had removed his charcoal suit jacket and placed it around her trembling frame. The jacket held his warmth, smelling of luxury cologne and clean steel, wrapping her in an undeniable shield of security.

Vincent sat back down across from her, resting his elbows on his knees, his dark eyes softer than she had ever seen them.

"I gave you my word, Emily," he said, his voice steady, low, and unbreakable. "No one touches your daughter. Not Julian. Not the Salieris. Not the men in those trucks. You are under my protection now. And in this city, my word is the law."
