Chapter 1

The grand foyer of the Connecticut estate was a masterclass in architectural intimidation. Colossal marble pillars stretched upward toward vaulted ceilings, bathed in the warm, golden glow of a massive crystal chandelier. It was a space designed to make men feel incredibly small, an echo chamber where a single misplaced footstep could draw the lethal attention of the guards stationed at the perimeter. Three of these men stood like statues near the heavy mahogany doors, their tailored dark-navy suits, crisp white shirts, and polished black shoes blending into the shadows. At the center of this suffocating silence stood Adrian Cole, a forty-year-old mafia boss who ruled the state with a cold, terrifying grip. Tall, heavily muscular, and movie-star handsome, Adrian wore a flawless charcoal-gray three-piece suit, a crisp white dress shirt, and a deep burgundy silk tie. Intricate, dark ink peeked out from his collar, the black tattoos extending across his neck, forearms, and hands, a physical manifestation of his brutal history.
Tonight, the suffocating tension of the foyer was broken not by a rival threat, but by the rhythmic, determined patter of tiny shoes against the marble.
"I have to go to work," a tiny voice announced, echoing through the vast space.
Three-year-old Nora Bennett marched directly across the center of the foyer. She was a vision of absolute innocence wrapped in a pale-blue velvet party dress, a cream cardigan, white tights, and burgundy Mary Jane shoes. Her long light-brown curls bounced with every step. But what made the guards freeze in sheer disbelief was the accessory draped around her small neck: Adrian’s oversized, spare burgundy silk tie, trailing past her knees. In her hand, she clutched a tiny pink plastic purse.
"Stop right there," one of the navy-suited guards muttered under his breath, stepping forward instinctively.
Nora did not retreat. She stopped, planted her small feet firmly on the marble, and raised a pink plastic toy phone to her ear. She narrowed her bright blue eyes, her serious little face locking onto the towering security guards. She puffed out her small chest, proudly imitating the imposing man who owned the house.
"Handle it," Nora commanded, her tiny voice firm and remarkably bossy as she pointed her plastic phone at the men. "Now."
The guards stared in stunned silence, entirely unsure if they should reprimand the child or step back. Adrian, who had been reviewing a ledger near the staircase, turned slowly. His piercing blue eyes widened in genuine surprise as he took in the absurd, brilliant sight of the three-year-old girl mimicking his exact inflection.
"Handle the business!" Nora repeated sharply, taking an aggressive step forward.
However, her commanding stride was instantly betrayed. The tip of her burgundy shoe caught the trailing end of Adrian’s oversized silk tie. Nora pitched forward, tumbling softly onto the cold marble floor.

The guards winced, expecting tears. Instead, the little girl scrambled instantly to her feet. She aggressively smoothed down her pale-blue velvet dress, adjusted the massive tie, and straightened her posture with an exaggerated, ridiculous dignity.
For the first time in three agonizing years, the hardened, grieving mafia boss threw his head back. Adrian Cole burst into genuine, resounding laughter.
