Chapter 6

Adrian turned away from the desk, walking slowly toward the large arched window overlooking the estate’s sprawling grounds. The darkness outside mirrored the heavy, suffocating weight pressing down on his chest. For three years, he had operated as a hollow machine, executing enemies and expanding territory to fill the void left by his brother’s murder. Now, the void was violently filled with a staggering reality: he was an uncle. The Cole bloodline had survived.
"You took three years of her life from me," Adrian stated, his voice barely a whisper against the glass. "I could have given her the world. I could have protected you both."
"You would have raised her in blood, Adrian," Claire countered, her voice trembling but resolute. She stood up, still holding the sleeping toddler. "Look at you. Look at the tattoos on your hands. Look at the armed men standing outside that door. James died because of this life. I will not let Nora become a pawn in a mafia war."
Adrian turned around slowly. His piercing blue eyes locked onto Claire, stripped of their usual intimidating coldness. In that moment, he wasn't a feared crime boss; he was a grieving brother looking at the last piece of his family.
"The men who killed James are still out there," Adrian said softly, his voice dropping into a deadly, controlled register. "The Donatellis have been circling my territory for months. If they find out that James left an heir—a legitimate claim to my estate—they won't just kill her, Claire. They will make a spectacle of it."
Claire went utterly pale, clutching Nora tighter. "No one knows. I swear to you, Adrian, no one knows she is a Cole."
"She is wearing my tie and carrying my brother's custom engraved watch through the main foyer of an estate crawling with fifty hired men," Adrian shot back, his frustration breaking through. "Secrets do not exist in my world. The second that watch hit the floor, her anonymity died."
"Then let us go," Claire begged, stepping forward. "Give us some money, and we will disappear. You will never see us again. I promise."

Adrian stared at the beautiful, desperate woman in the navy housekeeping dress. He looked down at the little girl resting against her shoulder, the pale-blue velvet dress rising and falling with soft, natural breathing.
"Absolutely not," Adrian refused, his tone carrying the absolute finality of a judge passing sentence. "She is a Cole. She carries my brother's blood. This estate is her birthright, and I am the only man on this earth capable of keeping her alive. You are not leaving."
