Chapter 9

The atmosphere inside the Connecticut estate shifted from oppressive silence to calculated, militaristic chaos. Heavy steel shutters slammed down over the massive windows, sealing the mansion in an impenetrable shell. The warm lighting of the chandeliers was abruptly cut, replaced by the harsh, dim red glow of the tactical emergency lights.
Claire sat huddled in the corner of the Master East Wing suite, rocking back and forth with Nora secured tightly in her arms. She had stripped off her cream apron, her fitted navy housekeeping dress blending into the shadows of the luxurious room. The little girl was crying softly now, the loud metallic clanks of the shutters and the heavy boots running down the hallway finally piercing her fearless demeanor.
"It's okay, baby, Mommy's got you," Claire whispered frantically, kissing the top of Nora's light-brown curls.
The heavy oak door of the suite burst open. Adrian strode in, looking like a god of war. He had discarded his suit jacket and tie entirely. His crisp white dress shirt was rolled up to his elbows, displaying the full, intimidating array of his black tattoos. A tactical vest was strapped tightly over his chest, and he carried a sleek, suppressed automatic rifle.
"The perimeter is locked," Adrian announced, his voice tight but completely controlled. He walked over to the bed and tossed a small, black encrypted radio onto the mattress. "Keep this with you. If you hear me give the code word 'Archangel,' you take Nora, you press the panel behind the vanity, and you go down the emergency chute to the bunker. Do you understand?"
Claire looked at the radio, her anxious eyes wide with sheer terror. "Adrian, there are dozens of them. They are going to breach the house!"
"They are going to die trying," Adrian corrected coldly. He crouched down in front of them, resting his rifle against his leg. He reached out and gently cupped Claire’s trembling cheek. "I failed James. I let him walk out of that door alone three years ago. I am not failing him again. You are my family."
He looked at Nora. The three-year-old was staring at the large gun resting against his leg, her bright blue eyes wide and frightened.
Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out the heavy silver pocket watch. He held it out by its delicate chain, letting it swing gently in the red emergency light.
"Nora," Adrian whispered, his deep voice miraculously soft amidst the chaos. "Do you want to hold the shiny clock?"
Nora sniffled, reaching out with a tiny, trembling hand to grasp the cool silver metal.
"Keep it safe for me," Adrian smiled faintly. "I have to go do the business now."

Nora looked up at him, her little face serious despite the tears on her cheeks. She gripped the watch tightly. "Handle it," she whispered.
"I will," Adrian swore.
