Chapter 2

Adrian’s deep, rumbling laughter echoed off the marble walls, entirely altering the dark, oppressive atmosphere of the estate. The guards exchanged bewildered glances; they had not heard their boss laugh since the violent death of his younger brother, James. Adrian didn't just chuckle; he was genuinely captivated. He took three long strides across the foyer, his polished black leather shoes clicking against the stone, and crouched down in front of the little girl.
Several paces behind them, hidden in the shadows of the arched service corridor, Claire Bennett froze entirely. At twenty-nine, Claire was a vision of anxious beauty, her delicate features framed by the stark lines of her fitted navy housekeeping dress and pristine cream apron. Her heart slammed violently against her ribs. She had spent three years desperately keeping Nora invisible, quietly doing her job, terrified of the powerful man currently smiling at her daughter.
"That was quite the order you just gave my men," Adrian said, his deep voice unexpectedly gentle and controlled. He rested his tattooed hands on his knees, his piercing blue eyes studying the fearless toddler.
"They were not listening," Nora stated matter-of-factly, adjusting her tiny pink purse. "I have to do the business."
Adrian’s soft smile faded just a fraction, replaced by an amused but intensely curious gaze. He pointed a tattooed finger at the little plastic bag clutched in her hands.
"I see," Adrian murmured, his observant eyes locking onto her. "And what’s in your briefcase?"
"Important things," Nora declared proudly. She didn't hesitate. With the dramatic flair only a toddler could muster, she unclasped the pink purse and dumped its contents directly onto the pristine marble floor.
A handful of broken red crayons scattered. Two crushed saltine crackers fell into a dusty pile. But amidst the debris of childhood, a heavy, metallic object tumbled out, gleaming sharply under the warm chandelier light.
It was an antique silver pocket watch.
The heavy metal clattered against the stone, but before it could slide away, Adrian’s reflexes took over. His large, tattooed hand shot out, catching the watch just inches from the floor. He picked it up slowly, his thumb brushing against the cold silver casing.
"Nora, no!" Claire gasped from the shadows, stepping forward before she could stop herself. Her low black shoes squeaked against the marble, but neither Adrian nor Nora looked her way.
"A shiny clock," Nora announced cheerfully, pointing at the object in his hand. "For the important meetings."

Adrian didn't respond. He slowly turned the heavy silver watch over in his palm. The warm ambient light caught the intricate, deep engravings on the back casing. The blood in Adrian's veins seemed to turn to absolute ice. The smile vanished entirely from his movie-star handsome face, replaced by a rigid, terrifying stillness.
There, etched perfectly into the silver, were two initials: J.C.
