Chapter 1 - the wrong buckle

The great room of the Vale Estate was an imposing cathedral of dark mahogany, Italian marble, and bulletproof glass. High above the roaring waves of the Pacific coastline, the mansion stood as the nerve center of Dominic Vale’s vast, untouchable empire. Tall, broad-shouldered, ruggedly handsome, and frighteningly calm, the legendary Mafia boss was a commanding presence even while recovering from a severe leg injury. He wore an elegant ivory suit with subtle gold embroidery along the lapels, an open-collar white dress shirt exposing dark, intricate tattoos along his collarbone, a gold luxury wristwatch, and polished shoes. Beneath his tailored right trouser leg, a heavy black carbon-fiber leg brace was hidden from view, though he leaned lightly on an iron-headed cane.
Behind the massive frosted glass doors of the adjoining conference room, the most powerful lieutenants and syndicate leaders in the state waited for the annual council meeting to begin.
Near the edge of the polished marble floor, Clare Rowan moved quietly with a stack of folded linen towels. Beautiful, hardworking, and perpetually anxious, the young maid adjusted her neat black-and-white maid uniform. Her soft brown hair was pulled back into a disciplined bun, her light, rosy cheeks flushed with the constant fear that any minor mistake might cost her her job—and the only safe shelter she had found for her four-year-old daughter.
Four-year-old Ellie Rowan, dressed in a bright green polka-dot dress with her fine blonde hair falling around her shoulders, was a child of uncanny observation. While other children played with dolls, Ellie was fascinated by buckles, straps, hinges, and mechanical latches.
Quietly, without making a sound, little Ellie wandered over to where the massive Mafia boss stood near the double doors. She knelt on the cold marble floor beside Dominic’s right shoe, her tiny hands reaching out to touch the lower adjustment strap of his hidden leg brace.
"Wrong," Ellie whispered softly.
Vincent Hale, Dominic’s bald, formidable head of security, moved like a thunderclap. Dressed in a dark tailored suit and black shirt with an earpiece tucked into his ear, Vincent stepped forward aggressively.
"Don’t touch him!" Vincent snapped sharply, his broad frame casting a dark shadow over the child.
Clare dropped the stack of linen towels onto a velvet armchair with a sharp gasp. Panic seized her heart as she sprinted across the polished floor, pulling Ellie back into her arms in pure terror.
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Vale!" Clare stammered, her voice shaking violently as she held Ellie against her chest. "She didn't mean to—she's only four, please—"
Dominic didn't raise his voice. He didn't even shift his weight. With a single icy, authoritative glance, he silenced Vincent and sent a chill through the entire room. The surrounding guards froze in place.
Dominic looked down at the tiny girl hiding partly behind her mother's black-and-white maid skirt.
"What is wrong?" Dominic asked calmly, his deep, rumbling voice cutting through the heavy air.
Ellie peeked out from behind her mother's skirt, her big brown eyes fixed fearlessly on the bottom of his ivory trousers. She raised a small finger, pointing directly toward the lower strap of his brace.
"The shiny part," Ellie whispered in a small, brave voice.
Dominic lowered his gaze. He slowly crouched down, his iron cane clicking against the marble as he brought himself closer to the little girl's eye level. The waiting syndicate men behind the glass doors watched through the semi-translucent panes in stunned silence.
Dominic reached down, pulling up the hem of his ivory trouser leg to reveal the black carbon-fiber brace. He touched the lower metallic strap. His sharp eyes narrowed instantly as his fingers registered the abnormal tension—the custom titanium pressure buckle had been altered, set two notches off its locking groove.
Dr. Nolan Mercer, Dominic’s private physician, stepped out from the side hallway. Wearing dark medical scrubs with a stethoscope around his neck, the older, sharp-eyed doctor looked instantly alarmed as he rushed over to inspect the fitting.
Vincent's eyes hardened into ruthless steel as he turned his gaze toward the conference room doors.
"It was outside," Ellie added in her small voice, her finger shifting from the strap to point straight through the clear glass panel of the conference doors. "The man in there changed it."
May you like
Dominic slowly unfastened the lower strap. As the pressure released, a hidden mechanical pin sprang outward—a pin designed to slowly drive into his healing knee joint every time he took a step. Had he walked into that council meeting, the brace would have permanently crippled him within minutes.
Dominic’s expression transformed into absolute, terrifying ice. He stood up slowly, his broad chest rising as his dark eyes traveled through the glass doors, locking directly onto Arthur Voss—his polished senior adviser in the expensive charcoal suit who sat at the head of the conference table, waiting.
