Chapter 5 - the council's trap

The following morning, the sun broke through the coastal fog, bathing the Vale Estate in sharp, cold golden light.

In the grand double-height dining hall, the seven senior lieutenants of the Vale Syndicate sat along the massive oak table. Arthur Voss sat near the center, looking immaculate in his charcoal suit, sipping dark coffee with an expression of artificial composure.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Dominic Vale entered the hall. He wore a dark navy tailored suit today, his white dress shirt open at the collar. He walked without his cane, stepping firmly and evenly across the floor despite the severe pain in his knee, demonstrating an iron willpower that left the entire room in awe.

Flanking him were Vincent and four heavily armed security guards. Behind them walked Clare, dressed in a simple, beautiful cream-colored dress, holding Ellie’s hand.

Arthur Voss lowered his coffee cup, his eyes narrowing slightly as he saw the maid and her child enter the executive council chamber.

"Dominic," Arthur spoke smoothly, offering a practiced smile. "We were beginning to think the council meeting would be postponed again due to your... unfortunate physical limitations."

"My physical limitations are temporary, Arthur," Dominic replied, taking his rightful seat at the head of the long oak table. "Unlike your loyalty."

The room fell dead silent. The lieutenants looked at one another in growing tension.

Dominic gestured to Vincent. Vincent walked over to the side console and activated a large digital monitor on the wall. On the screen popped up a complete record of offshore bank transfers originating from Arthur Voss’s private shell companies, funneled directly into the Vance Syndicate in Chicago.

Arthur’s face drained of color, though he forced a light laugh. "Dominic... if this is about financial discrepancies in the pier accounts, I can explain—"

"This isn't about the pier accounts, Arthur," Dominic interrupted, his voice dropping into an icy register. "This is about the titanium pin you inserted into my leg brace yesterday. The pin designed to paralyze me so you could claim emergency control of this council."

"That's absurd!" Arthur barked, standing up from his chair, looking around at the other lieutenants for support. "You're taking the word of digital fabrications? I've served this family for fifteen years!"

Dominic looked down at four-year-old Ellie, who stood safely beside Clare's seat.

"Ellie," Dominic said softly. "Tell the council what you saw yesterday outside this room."

Ellie looked at Arthur Voss, her small voice ringing clear and true through the silent chamber. "He used a little silver key to turn the shiny button on Mr. Dominic's leg. Then he put the key in his left coat pocket."

Arthur's hand instinctively twitched toward his left charcoal jacket pocket.

Vincent moved like lightning. Before Arthur could reach into his coat, Vincent grabbed Arthur by the collar, slamming him face-down against the heavy oak table. With a swift movement, Vincent reached into Arthur's left coat pocket and pulled out a small, specialized titanium adjustment tool—coated with trace residues of the dark paralytic compound.

The lieutenants gasped in collective fury, pulling their sidearms and pointing them directly at Arthur.

"Take him down to the sub-level vault," Dominic ordered flatly. "And contact our teams in Chicago. It's time to clean house."
