Chapter 2 - The Lock on the Gates

The silence in the grand reception hall was so dense that the sound of the autumn rain outside felt like thunder.
Caleb stopped two steps above the marble floor, his hand still extended in mid-air. For a split second, the charming, aristocratic mask he wore so effortlessly slipped, revealing a glimpse of something sharp, desperate, and calculating.
"She’s an eight-year-old child, Adrian," Caleb said, letting his arm fall smoothly back to his side as he let out a soft, dismissive chuckle. "Are we really going to pause estate operations because a maid’s daughter is making up stories about financial paperwork she doesn't understand?"
Adrian did not answer immediately. He looked down at the sheet in his hand, his long fingers tracing the dark ink of the handwritten signature beside the offshore routing number.
"This isn't a clerical error, Caleb," Adrian said, his voice quiet, low, and laced with absolute authority. "This is a signature."
Harrison Cole made a quiet, gasping sound from the staircase, his face as white as the marble beneath his shoes. He dropped to his knees and began frantically gathering the scattered papers from the floor.
"Harrison," Adrian commanded without turning his head. "Leave those on the ground. Walk into my private study. Now."
Harrison didn't hesitate. He stood up, trembling, and practically sprinted down the corridor toward the west wing of the estate.
Adrian looked down at Rosa, who was holding Emily tightly against her chest. The young housemaid looked terrified, her dark eyes wide as she waited for the inevitable wrath that usually followed a disruption in a mafia household.
"Rosa," Adrian said, his voice softening by a fraction. "Take Emily to the kitchen. Have the chef prepare whatever she wants for dinner. You are not losing your job. And your back pay will be deposited into your hands before the sun sets today."
Rosa gasped, tears pouring down her pale cheeks as she pressed her hand to her mouth. "Thank you, Mr. Blackwell... thank you so much."
"Go," Adrian said gently.
Once Rosa and Emily disappeared into the service corridor, Adrian turned his full attention back to Caleb. He pulled a heavy silver radio from his inner coat pocket and pressed the primary channel button.
"Marcus," Adrian spoke into the device. "Lock the estate gates. Shutdown the perimeter drive. Nobody enters or leaves this property until I personally sign the clearance log."
Over the radio, his security chief’s voice crackled back instantly: "Understood, Boss. Perimeter locked."
Caleb’s smile vanished completely. "Adrian, this is ridiculous. You're locking down the entire estate over a few missing maid salaries? I have a board meeting with our logistics partners in an hour!"
"The meeting can wait, brother," Adrian said coldly, turning on his heel and walking toward his private study. "Our conversation cannot."
The private study was a massive room lined with dark mahogany bookshelves, heavy leather armchairs, and floor-to-ceiling bulletproof windows looking out over the misty estate grounds.
Harrison Cole stood near the cold fireplace, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold his dark tie straight. Caleb walked in behind Adrian, closing the heavy oak doors with a firm click.
Adrian walked behind his massive executive desk, set the retrieved paper on the leather blotter, and pulled out his private laptop. He typed a short command, accessing the estate's central treasury system.
"The account number on this paper," Adrian began, turning the screen toward Harrison. "It belongs to a private shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Vanguard Holdings. Over the last ninety days, three hundred thousand dollars in domestic staff wages have been routed into it."
Harrison swallowed hard, looking toward Caleb for help, but Caleb remained standing by the window, his arms crossed, his face an unreadable mask.
"I... I was instructed to process those transfers, Mr. Blackwell," Harrison stammered, his voice cracking. "I was told it was an internal tax reallocation strategy authorized by executive management!"
"Authorized by whom, Harrison?" Adrian asked, leaning forward, resting his hands on the desk.
Harrison’s eyes darted toward Caleb. "By... by Mr. Caleb."
Caleb let out a short, cold laugh. "Harrison, don't try to drag me into your embezzlement scheme to save your own skin! I signed dozens of routine expenditure forms last month! If you slipped a fraudulent routing slip into my daily signature stack, that makes you a thief, not me!"
"You told me to burn the authorization slip, Caleb!" Harrison blurted out, panic overwhelming his fear of the younger brother. "You explicitly said that if Adrian’s audit team saw those numbers, you would make sure I took the fall!"
"Enough!" Adrian’s voice boomed through the room like a thunderclap, instantly silencing both men.
Adrian looked at his laptop screen as a secondary secure ledger finished downloading. His gray-blue eyes narrowed as he read the secondary account metadata.

"This isn't just a maid salary theft, Caleb," Adrian whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. "The Vanguard Holdings account wasn't opened three months ago. It was opened five years ago... on the exact night our father died."
Caleb stiffened by the window, all the color draining from his handsome face as the room plunged into an icy, suffocating calm.
