Chapter 1 - The Uninvited Guest

The grand ballroom of the Grand Luxe Hotel glowed under the warm, radiant light of twelve hand-cut crystal chandeliers. Gold leafing covered the arched cornices, reflecting the champagne flutes and emerald dresses of the city’s top one percent. It was the annual Metropolitan Charity Gala, an event where influence was traded like currency and standing was defined by the proximity of your seat to the center stage.

Standing near the edge of the VIP dais was Victoria Langford. At forty-one, she possessed an elegance that was as razor-sharp as it was cold. Her fair, rosy skin was flawless, highlighted by an extravagant crimson silk evening gown that flowed around her heels like liquid fire. A heavy diamond necklace rested against her collarbone, matching the blinding sparkle of her diamond bracelet and dangling earrings. She held her crystal flute with calibrated poise, her sharp blue eyes scanning the crowd with pure, unadulterated condescension.

Near the velvet ropes separating the general guests from the VIP enclosure, a man walked in quietly.

Ethan Caldwell did not carry himself like someone seeking attention, yet his presence altered the air around him. Tall, deeply masculine, and broad-shouldered, he wore a deliberately simple charcoal-dark suit. There were no designer labels visible, no luxury watch glittering on his wrist, and no silk pocket square. His short hair was neatly combed, and his sharp, square jaw set into a expression of terrifying stillness. His clear blue eyes moved over the room with a calm, observant weight.

Without asking for permission from the ushers, Ethan stepped past the velvet rope and walked toward a vacant armchair situated at the primary VIP table.

Victoria turned her head, her sharp eyes locking onto the plain dark suit. Her lips curled into an instant, disdainful sneer.
