Chapter 5 - The Shifting Tides

A cold wave of shock washed over the surrounding crowd. The whispering died instantly. The young executives who had been laughing a minute ago stood frozen, their glasses hovering halfway to their lips.
Victoria remained on her knees in the middle of the spilled punch, her hand frozen in mid-air. "Mr... Caldwell?" she stammered, her voice dropping to an insecure whisper. "What do you mean, Mr. Caldwell? He's... he's wearing a ten-dollar suit!"
Director Sterling straightened up, turning his head slowly toward Victoria. His eyes were cold as granite, his professional warmth vanishing entirely.
"Mrs. Langford," Sterling said with chilling composure. "You are speaking to Ethan Caldwell. The founder and sole owner of the Caldwell Hotel Group, the man whose name is on the deed of every square inch of this property, including the floor you are currently sitting on."
Victoria stared up at Ethan, her breathing coming in fast, shallow gasps. Her mind reeled as she pieced together the terrifying reality. The man she had called poor trash was the invisible mogul who owned thirty percent of the city's real estate, a man whose net worth was so vast he didn't need to wear designer labels to prove his power.
Ethan slowly reached into his suit pocket, pulled out a crisp white linen handkerchief, and casually wiped a stray drop of champagne from his thumb.
"Sterling," Ethan said, his voice low, masculine, and carrying through the silent room like a thunderclap.

"Yes, Mr. Caldwell?" Sterling replied instantly.
"Cancel Mrs. Langford’s foundation charter," Ethan said calmly, placing the handkerchief back in his pocket. "Revoke her family's membership from all Caldwell properties worldwide. And have her escorted out through the service corridor. She mentioned earlier that it suits her."
