Chapter 1 - the sapphire in the wall

The afternoon light filtered softly through the high floor-to-ceiling windows of Ashford Manor, casting long golden shapes across the dark Persian rugs of the master study. Damon Ashford walked through the heavy mahogany doors, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored brown suit. At forty-two, the billionaire widower carried an air of absolute, unshakeable authority. His dark hair was neatly styled, his jaw framed by light stubble, and his intense eyes usually held a cold, guarded calm that kept the world at a safe distance.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

Sitting proudly in his massive leather executive chair behind the desk was three-year-old Zuri Carter. Her small feet dangled inches above the floor, her bright curly brown hair bouncing as she adjusted the pink bow tied near her temple. She wore a pale-pink dress with clean white socks and tiny pink shoes.

Zuri planted both of her little hands flat on the polished mahogany surface, puffing out her chest like a tiny CEO.

She pointed her small finger directly toward the solid walnut wall behind Damon.

Zuri: “I’m the boss now. Find Mommy’s ring.”

Damon froze. The breath locked in his chest. In the four years since his wife, Elena, had tragically passed away, no one had dared mention her personal belongings in his presence—let alone her ring.

Zuri didn't shrink under his intense gaze. She pointed again, her little hand moving from a small decorative gold lion figurine on the corner of the desk to one exact, seamless panel on the walnut wall behind him.

Before Damon could process the toddler's words, the study door flew open. Naomi Carter rushed into the room, her face pale, her hands trembling. Dressed in her neat light-blue-and-white maid uniform, her soft brown hair tied back, the thirty-one-year-old mother looked utterly horrified to find her child in the estate's forbidden inner sanctuary.

"Zuri! Oh sweetie, no!" Naomi gasped, rushing forward to scoop the toddler into her arms. "Mr. Ashford, I am so sorry! The hallway door was unlatched while I was turning down the guest linens—I turned my back for two seconds—"

Damon didn't answer. He held up one hand, silencing Naomi without taking his eyes off the wall.

He walked slowly past his desk, stopping directly in front of the walnut panel Zuri had pointed out. He reached out and pressed his thumb firmly against the hidden seam beside the carved wood.

A sharp, metallic click echoed through the silent study.

A narrow hidden compartment sprang open. Damon reached inside with a trembling hand and pulled out a small black velvet box. He flipped the latch open. Resting on the black satin inside was a breathtaking three-carat oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds—Elena’s original wedding ring, a piece Damon had spent four agonizing years searching for after her death.

Damon’s expression turned utterly stunned. His knuckles turned white around the box.

Zuri, resting safely against Naomi's shoulder, looked toward the dark hallway outside the open study doors. She pointed her tiny finger out into the dim corridor.

Zuri (whispering): “The sad lady who sings showed me.”

A faint, haunting sound suddenly drifted down the long, empty hallway—the soft, melodious humming of a woman’s voice singing a lullaby that Damon recognized down to his very soul.

Damon went completely still, the blood draining from his face.
