Chapter 4 - the broken silver band

Damon reached the foot of the stairs, stepping directly between Evelyn and the young mother. His presence was so immense and intimidating that Evelyn instinctively took a half-step back.

Damon looked down at Zuri, who was clinging to Naomi's apron legs, her wide brown eyes filled with tears. He knelt down gracefully, gently taking Zuri's small wrist in his hand.

The silver bracelet was indeed an antique piece—a delicate filigree band carved with small roses. But as Damon turned the silver band over under the chandelier light, he saw three distinct initials engraved on the inside clasp: N.C.

Damon slowly stood up, looking cold as stone at Evelyn. "This isn't Elena's bracelet, Evelyn. It belonged to Naomi when she was a child. Her initials are carved right here."

Evelyn’s face flushed red with sudden embarrassment and anger. "That's impossible! It looks identical to the one Elena wore!"

"Because my mother made them both twenty-five years ago," Naomi spoke up, her voice clear and steady despite her trembling hands. "My mother was the estate seamstress for Mr. Ashford's father. She made matching silver bands for several girls on the property."

Evelyn stared at Naomi in total shock, her eyes darting between the maid and Damon. "Your mother was Martha Carter?"

"Yes," Naomi said softly.

Damon’s jaw tightened. He had known Martha Carter had worked for his father, but he had never connected the quiet maid who applied for a job two years ago to the daughter of his family's former head seamstress.

"Evelyn," Damon said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "State your business here, or leave my home."

Evelyn smoothed the lapels of her ivory coat, trying to regain her regal composure. "I came for the trust deeds, Damon. The four-year probate period for Elena's estate expires next month. Under my father's will, if Elena's original wedding ring and birth records aren't presented to the probate court by the end of this week, her share of the shipping trust defaults directly to me."

Damon pulled his hand from his pocket, holding the small black velvet box between his thumb and forefinger. He slowly flipped the latch open, revealing the brilliant three-carat sapphire shining in the light.

Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes widened in pure, unadulterated horror. "The... the ring? Where did you find that?!"

"Zuri found it," Damon replied softly, his dark eyes burning into Evelyn's soul. "Inside the hidden wall behind my desk."

Evelyn backed away two steps, her pale face turning ashen gray as if she had just seen a ghost.
