Chapter 8 - the confrontation in the storm

A blinding flash of lightning illuminated the nursery, casting long, terrifying shadows across the walls.
Evelyn reached into her wet raincoat, pulling out a heavy iron crowbar she had used to force open the basement ventilation panel! She raised it wildly, her eyes filled with manic desperation.
"Elena was weak!" Evelyn shrieked over the sound of thunder. "She didn't deserve the Ashford fortune! She didn't deserve you! I took what belonged to my family!"
"You took nothing," Damon said, his posture tall, dark, and utterly unshakeable. He took two massive steps forward, closing the distance in a fraction of a second.
Before Evelyn could swing the iron bar, Damon grabbed her wrist with crushing, broad strength, twisting the metal tool out of her grip and sending it clattering onto the floorboards!
He pinned her against the heavy window frame, holding her securely as Marcus and three armed security guards burst into the room with flashlights blazing!
"Boss!" Marcus called out, his weapon drawn. "Perimeter guards secured her driver outside! The police are three minutes away!"
"Take her down to the holding quarters in the gatehouse," Damon ordered coldly, handing Evelyn over to his enforcers. "Tell the chief of police that we have the full audio confession of Elena Ashford's attempted murder."
Evelyn wept hysterically as the guards dragged her out of the room, her elegant facade completely shattered.
Silence returned to the nursery, broken only by the sound of the rain against the windowpane.
Naomi dropped to her knees beside the bed, wrapping her arms tightly around Zuri, kissing her hair, her cheeks, her small hands. "Oh sweetie... you're safe... you're safe..."

Zuri patted her mother's cheek gently, then looked over Naomi's shoulder at Damon standing in the doorway.
Zuri pointed her little hand toward the floorboards under her bed. "The sad lady left the rest of her papers for Mr. Damon."
