Chapter 9 - the final journal

The storm slowly cleared by dawn, leaving the sky over Ashford Manor a crisp, brilliant shade of blue.

In the grand study, the warm morning sun poured through the high windows. Damon sat behind his mahogany desk, holding a thick, leather-bound journal that Marcus had just retrieved from beneath the nursery floorboards where Zuri had pointed.

Sitting across from him in a comfortable leather armchair was Naomi, holding three-year-old Zuri in her lap. The toddler was happily drinking a glass of warm milk, her pink bow sitting straight in her hair.

Damon turned to the final pages of the journal, reading Elena's delicate, sweeping handwriting.

If anyone finds this diary, know that Naomi Carter and her mother Martha are the true guardians of this house. When Evelyn poisoned my medication four years ago, Martha hid me in the lower vaults and nursed me back to health. Before I fled to the sanctuary in Geneva under an assumed name, I left my sapphire ring in the wall so that one day, when the time was right, Damon would know the truth.

Damon’s eyes glistened with unshed tears as he read his late wife's final words. He looked up from the journal, staring at Naomi with deep, overwhelming gratitude.

"Your mother saved my wife's life, Naomi," Damon said softly, his deep voice thick with emotion. "She kept her safe when everyone else betrayed her."

Naomi looked at him, tears of relief spilling down her fair cheeks. "My mother always said that true loyalty doesn't ask for permission, Mr. Ashford. It just protects what is good."

Damon stood up from his desk, carrying the small black velvet box containing the sapphire ring. He walked over to Naomi and Zuri, stopping before them.

He opened the velvet box and pulled out a secondary, smaller silver chain that had been tucked beneath the ring—a delicate pendant shaped like a golden lion.

He leaned down and gently fastened the golden lion chain around little Zuri's neck.

"Thank you, little boss," Damon whispered gently, stroking the toddler's curly hair. "You brought the light back into this house."

Zuri giggled happily, touching the gold lion on her chest. "Now Mr. Damon isn't sad anymore!"
