Chapter 10 - the shadow in the basement

Gabriel didn't run. He moved with a terrifying, calculated speed, unholstering a matte-black semi-automatic pistol from beneath his arm as he stepped into the hallway.
"Stay inside this room," Gabriel ordered Hannah, his voice leaving no room for debate. "Lock the deadbolt. If anyone turns that handle who isn't me, take Lucia into the bathroom and barricade the door."
"Gabriel, wait," Hannah said, stepping forward. "The basement power grid—where is it located?"
Gabriel paused at the top of the stairs. "In the utility wing, behind the indoor garage. Why?"
"When Colin’s restaurant lost power last winter during the blizzard, the backup generator took forty seconds to kick in," Hannah said rapidly. "Whoever cut your power knew the exact blind spots of your security system. A stranger from New York or Sicily couldn't navigate this house in the dark."
Gabriel’s eyes hardened. "You're saying the shooter is already inside."
"I'm saying the shooter never left," Hannah whispered.
A heavy crash echoed from the first floor—the sound of shattering glass, followed immediately by two muffled *thuds* of suppressed gunfire.
Gabriel didn't wait. He bolted down the staircase, moving like a ghost down the marble steps.
Hannah immediately locked Lucia’s heavy oak bedroom door, turning the brass deadbolt until it clicked. She rushed to the four-poster bed, shook Lucia awake, and gathered the groggy child in her arms.
"Svegliati, Lucia," Hannah whispered urgently. "Dobbiamo nasconderci."
Lucia blinked her large dark eyes, sensing the danger instantly. She didn't cry. She wrapped her arms around Hannah’s neck as Hannah carried her into the adjoining master bathroom.
The bathroom was lined in dark Italian marble, with a freestanding soaking tub and a massive walk-in shower. Hannah stepped inside the heavy glass shower stall, set Lucia down on the marble bench, and reached into the cabinet under the sink, looking for anything that could be used as a weapon.
Her hands found a heavy brass towel bar that had been unscrewed for repairs. It was solid metal, two feet long. She gripped it with both hands.
Outside in the bedroom, the floorboards creaked.
Someone was walking across the carpet.
Slow, deliberate footsteps approached the bathroom door.
Hannah held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She raised the brass bar, positioning herself right behind the doorframe.
The brass handle of the bathroom door jiggled.
Then, the lock clicked.
The door swung inward.
A tall figure stepped into the dark bathroom, a silencer-equipped pistol raised at chest level.
Hannah didn't hesitate. With all the force of her plus-size frame, she swung the heavy brass bar horizontally, aiming straight for the intruder’s wrist.
*CRACK.*
The gun flew from the intruder’s hand, clattering against the marble floor. The figure gasped in pain, stumbling backward into the vanity mirror.
Hannah lunged forward, using her full body weight to slam the intruder against the wall, pinning them by the throat with the metal bar.
The moonlight through the high window illuminated the intruder's face.
Hannah gasped in shock.

It wasn't the blonde courier. It wasn't Elena.
It was Colin Harper, the restaurant manager.
