Chapter 8 - the bloodline test

Elena’s eyes darted between Gabriel and the young boy, her polished veneer cracking for the first time.

"Nicholas, you're mistaken," Elena said, forcing a nervous, delicate laugh that sounded entirely hollow. "I was steaming my own gown for the gala. Mrs. Gable handled all of Lucia’s wardrobe."

"Mrs. Gable is currently tied to a chair in the basement," Gabriel said, stepping toward her. Each footstep echoed against the marble tiles like a hammer strike. "And Dante is very good at asking questions. Would you like to join her, Elena?"

Elena stiffened, her chin lifting in a desperate attempt to regain control. "You wouldn't dare touch me, Gabriel. My father controls the waterfront docks in New York. If you lay a hand on me, the entire Commission will come down on Chicago."

Hannah stood quietly near the entrance, holding Nicholas’s hand. She observed Elena’s body language: the crossed arms, the rapid blinking, the way her eyes kept shifting toward the grand staircase rather than the front door.

Elena wasn't afraid of Gabriel’s men in the basement. She was afraid of something upstairs.

"Take Lucia to her room," Gabriel commanded, turning to Hannah. "Nicholas, show her the way. Change your sister into clean cotton pajamas and throw that velvet dress into a biohazard bag."

"Yes, sir," Hannah said.

She gently lifted Lucia from Gabriel’s arms. The nine-year-old stirred in her sleep, burying her face into Hannah’s shoulder once again. Nicholas led Hannah up the sweeping spiral staircase, leaving Gabriel and Elena alone in the foyer below.

As Hannah reached the second-floor landing, the sound of Gabriel’s low, thunderous voice reverberated up the stairwell: "I don't give a damn about the Commission, Elena. If you touched my daughter, your father won't find enough of you to bury."

Nicholas led Hannah down a wide, carpeted corridor lined with family portraits. The house was dead quiet except for the distant hum of the security monitors.

"In here," Nicholas whispered, pushing open a heavy white door.

Lucia’s bedroom was massive, decorated in soft pinks and creams, with a four-poster canopy bed and shelves lined with porcelain dolls. Hannah carefully laid the sleeping girl on the mattress, unzipped the poisoned velvet dress, and pulled it free without letting it brush Lucia’s face. She sealed the garment inside a plastic laundry bag from the closet.

After helping Nicholas dress his sister in soft yellow pajamas, Hannah tucked the thick duvet around the little girl's chin.

"You really saved her, didn't you?" Nicholas asked quietly, standing by the edge of the bed. His young eyes were rimmed with dark circles.

"She's going to be fine, Nicholas," Hannah assured him gently. "The medicine worked. She just needs rest."

Nicholas looked down at his polished leather shoes. "Elena hates us. She pretends to be nice when Dad is around, but whenever he leaves for New York, she tells Lucia that she doesn't belong here."

"Why would she say that?" Hannah asked, pulling a chair closer.

Nicholas hesitated. He walked over to Lucia’s vanity table, opened a small hidden drawer beneath the jewelry box, and pulled out a folded document.

"I found this in Elena’s study two weeks ago," Nicholas whispered, handing the paper to Hannah. "I don't understand what all the numbers mean, but it has my sister's name on it."

Hannah unfolded the heavy cream paper.

It was an official document from a private genetic laboratory in Zurich, dated three weeks prior.

It was a DNA paternity test.

Hannah scanned the bold text at the bottom of the page, and her breath caught in her throat.

*SUBJECT: LUCIA MORETTI.*

*ALLEGED FATHER: GABRIEL MORETTI.*

*PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0.00%.*

Hannah stared at the page in utter disbelief. According to the Swiss laboratory, Gabriel Moretti was not Lucia’s biological father.

Before Hannah could process the revelation, a heavy hand descended onto her shoulder from behind.

May you like

She spun around, gasping.

Gabriel stood in the doorway of the bedroom, his eyes fixed on the paper in her hands.
