Chapter 7 - the estate gates

The armored black Suburban tore through the iron gates of the Moretti estate in Oak Brook thirty minutes later, flanked by two chase vehicles with tinted windows.
The rain had started to fall over the Chicago suburbs, slicking the long, winding driveway that cut through fifty acres of manicured forest. Floodlights illuminated the perimeter, casting sharp shadows against the limestone facade of the massive three-story mansion.
Inside the Suburban, Lucia was fast asleep, her head resting securely on Hannah’s lap. Hannah stroked the young girl's dark hair with steady, rhythmic fingers, while Nicholas sat beside them, watching his sister with an expression far too serious for a ten-year-old boy.
In the front passenger seat, Gabriel hadn't spoken a single word since they left the city. His broad shoulders were squared, his phone pressed to his ear, listening in absolute silence.
"We have her in the wine cellar, boss," a voice crackled through the phone speaker. It was Dante, Gabriel’s underboss and closest confidant. "She hasn't said a word. But we found three thousand dollars in cash and an open one-way ticket to Rome in her bedroom safe."
Gabriel ended the call without answering.
He stepped out of the vehicle the second the SUV stopped beneath the covered portico. Gabriel walked around to the passenger side, opened the heavy door, and reached in to lift Lucia into his arms. He wrapped a dry wool blanket around her, ensuring the poisoned velvet dress didn't touch her bare skin.
"Nicholas, inside," Gabriel ordered quietly. Then he looked at Hannah. "You too."
Hannah stepped out into the chilly night air, smoothing her rumpled uniform. As she followed Gabriel through the massive mahogany double doors, four armed guards in tactical gear snapped to attention, lowering their heads in deference.
The inside of the mansion was breathtaking: towering vaulted ceilings, marble floors, oil paintings in ornate gold frames, and a grand spiral staircase that curved into the upper shadows. Yet despite the luxury, the air felt heavy, cold, and paranoid.
A tall, sharp-featured woman in an elegant black dress descended the stairs. She was in her late thirties, with immaculately styled blonde hair, fair skin, and sharp blue eyes that instantly swept over Hannah with cold disdain.
"Gabriel!" the woman exclaimed, rushing toward him with hands outstretched. "Thank God you’re back! Dante’s men are running through the house like animals! What on earth is happening?"
Gabriel didn't let her touch the child. He took half a step back, angling Lucia away from her.
"Where were you when Lucia’s dress arrived from New York on Tuesday, Elena?" Gabriel asked, his voice deceptively smooth.
The woman, Elena, froze. Her blue eyes flickered toward Nicholas, then snapped to Hannah.
"I was in the city meeting with the charity committee," Elena said, her voice tight with irritation. "Gabriel, what are you implying? And who is this... servant you brought into our home?"
"This 'servant' saved Lucia’s life tonight," Gabriel said, his tone biting. "While someone under this roof poisoned her clothes."
Elena gasped, taking a dramatic step back, her hand flying to her throat. "Poisoned? That's ridiculous! Who would—"
"Elena," Nicholas spoke up from behind his father, his young voice cutting through the foyer.
Elena turned to look at the boy. "Yes, Nicholas?"
Nicholas pulled his hands out of his suit pockets. "You helped Mrs. Gable unpack Lucia’s red dress yesterday morning. I saw you in the dressing room. You told me you were steaming the velvet with lavender water."

The silence in the grand foyer became absolute.
Elena’s face turned from pale to ghostly white.
