Chapter 6 - the scent of lavender

Gabriel didn't ask questions. He bolted through the double doors, knocking a service tray out of his path with a crash of silver and glass.

Hannah followed right on his heels, her service shoes gripping the slick wood floor.

In the front foyer, near the coat check, Lucia was curled on a plush leather bench. Her face was flushed bright red, her lips tinged with an alarming shade of blue. She clawed at her throat with tiny hands, gasping for air in high, wheezing whistles that echoed through the marble entryway.

"Lucia!" Gabriel dropped to his knees, his massive hands hovering over his daughter in pure agony. He was a man who ruled half of Chicago’s underworld, a man whose name terrified judges and district attorneys, yet he looked utterly paralyzed. "Sweetheart, look at me! Look at Papà!"

"She didn't eat the chicken!" Nicholas cried, grabbing Gabriel's arm. "Dad, I watched her! She didn't take a single bite! How is this happening?!"

Hannah dropped to her knees beside Gabriel. Her medical translator training took over instantly. "Anaphylaxis can be triggered by skin contact or inhalation if the allergy is severe enough! Did she touch anything?"

Lucia gasped, her eyes rolling back slightly as she weakly clutched the dark-red velvet bow in her hair.

Hannah grabbed the little girl's hands to pull them away from her throat, and that was when the scent hit her.

It wasn't food.

It was the faint, sweet scent of lavender and toasted pine oil, radiating directly from the velvet collar of Lucia’s dress.

"Her clothes," Hannah gasped, looking up at Gabriel. "Someone coated her dress in concentrated pine nut oil!"

Gabriel’s face went completely blank with shock. "Her dress came from our private tailor in New York three days ago."

"We don't have time for that!" Hannah shouted, snapping him out of his trance. "Her airway is closing! Gabriel, do you have an EpiPen?!"

"In the car," Gabriel said, his voice rising in panic. "Frank is bringing it around—"

"She doesn't have two minutes!" Hannah tore off her restaurant vest and threw it aside. She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out her own personal autoinjector—an EpiPen she carried everywhere for her own severe bee sting allergy.

"What is that?" Gabriel demanded, his hand instantly clamping around Hannah’s wrist with bruising force. "What are you giving her?"

Hannah looked him dead in the eyes, refusing to flinch against his iron grip. "It’s pediatric-dose epinephrine. If I don't inject this into her thigh right now, your daughter will suffer brain damage in ninety seconds. Trust me, or watch her die."

Gabriel stared into Hannah’s determined hazel eyes.

For a man who trusted no one in the world, the hesitation lasted less than a heartbeat.

He let go of her wrist. "Do it."

Hannah didn't waste a second. She pulled the safety cap off the autoinjector, gripped Lucia’s left leg, and slammed the needle firmly into the outer thigh of the girl’s velvet dress.

*CLICK.*

Hannah held it in place, counting aloud: "One... two... three... four... five."

She pulled the needle away and massaged the spot with the palm of her hand.

For four agonizing seconds, nothing happened. Lucia lay motionless, her chest still.

Then, with a violent, shuddering gasp, Lucia drew in a deep lungful of air. Her chest expanded. The blue tint around her lips began to fade back to pale pink.

Lucia opened her tear-filled eyes, coughed weakly, and reached her small arms upward.

She didn't reach for Gabriel.

She threw her arms around Hannah’s neck, burying her face into Hannah’s shoulder and sobbing uncontrollably.

"Grazie," Lucia wept against Hannah’s collar. "Grazie..."

Hannah wrapped her arms around the trembling child, rocking her gently on the marble floor. "Sei al sicuro, tesoro. Ci sono io."

Gabriel remained on his knees, his chest heaving as if he had just run a marathon. He looked at his daughter clinging to the plus-size waitress, then slowly lowered his head, pressing his forehead against Lucia’s velvet skirt in silent, overwhelming relief.

When he finally raised his head, all vulnerability was gone. His face had transformed into a mask of pure, lethal vengeance.

He stood up and pulled out his phone, speed-dialing a number.

"Dante," Gabriel said into the receiver. "Sweep my house in Oak Brook right now. Strip the staff. Detain Lucia’s private governess."

Gabriel paused, his dark eyes locking onto the velvet bow in his daughter's hair.

"Someone inside my own home tried to execute my daughter tonight."
