Chapter 6 - HARPER’S LESSONS

The audit found another problem.

Harper’s lessons had been partly reimbursed by the Bellini Young Artists Initiative.

Why?

She qualified for a talent-development grant category.

Did she need financial aid?

No.

The category allowed merit-based enrichment independent of need.

Legal.

Disclosed?

Not clearly enough.

Lucinda chaired the advisory committee while her daughter received benefits.

She recused formally from annual award approval.

But emails showed she recommended Harper’s teachers, travel, and masterclasses before recusal.

Conflict.

Amounts:

Approximately $68,000 over three years.

Not theft.

Services occurred.

Pricing normal.

But process contaminated.

Then Calder’s reviewers asked the obvious:

Would Harper have received the same support without her mother chairing the committee?

May you like

No one could prove yes.

That was enough to require reform.
