People kept telling the story as:
Mafia father watches cousin hurt daughter, then destroys her.
I hated that version.
It made Lucinda’s violence into the center and my slap into the solution.
Neither was true.
The solution began with Mrs. Hayes refusing to move a child from a solo because a donor relative demanded it.
Then a program coordinator telling the truth.
Then paper records.
Then an external funder asking questions.
Then Harper saying:
“I didn’t want it.”

That was how the structure changed.
Not because Salvatore Bellini looked frightening in a suit.
