Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT BEFORE CALDER

Calder Arts Trust scheduled its review.

Not trial.

Not raid.

Program review.

The Foundation had to provide:

Original scores.

Grant decisions.

Related-party disclosures.

Event contracts.

Corrective plan.

Lucinda demanded the review be postponed.

Why?

“Reputational harm.”

The board refused.

Then her lawyer produced one final document.

A draft renewal agreement between the Foundation and Bellini Arts Events.

Five years.

Estimated value:

$2.1 million.

Lucinda’s company.

Not signed.

Board approval scheduled after Calder commitment.

If Calder reduced funding, the renewal scope would shrink dramatically.

There.

The stakes finally aligned.

Harper’s manufactured status supported donor marketing.

Donor funding supported expanded programming.

Expanded programming supported a multimillion-dollar contract renewal for Lucinda’s company.

The child’s solo did not legally trigger the money.

It protected the story on which Lucinda had built the renewal pitch.

Tomorrow, that story would collapse.
