Chapter 5 - The Clinical Verdict

Less than two minutes later, the grand oak doors of the ballroom opened, and Dr. Harris strode into the room. The Moretti family’s trusted private physician was a man of calm, intelligent authority. He wore an elegant dark suit, his fair skin pale with sharp alertness. He carried a compact, sleek silver medical testing kit in his left hand.

"Dominic, what is the emergency?" Dr. Harris asked, his American accent crisp and professional. He ignored the terrified, wealthy guests and walked directly toward the head of the dining table.

"Lily believes someone tampered with Ethan’s portion of the cake," Dominic stated coldly, his eyes locked on the splattered mess on the floor. "I need you to run a rapid toxin screen on the frosting."

Dr. Harris did not question the logic of trusting a three-year-old. He had served the Moretti family long enough to know that in their world, threats came from the most unexpected shadows. He immediately knelt on the marble floor beside the ruined cake, unlatching his silver medical kit.

"Elena, pull Lily back, please," Dr. Harris requested softly.

Elena eagerly complied, wrapping her arms around the toddler and pulling her several feet away. Lily clung to her mother’s white apron, her observant eyes watching the doctor’s every move.

Dr. Harris pulled a pair of black nitrile gloves from his kit and snapped them onto his hands. He retrieved a small glass vial and a sterile scalpel. With precise, experienced movements, he scraped a thick layer of the pristine white vanilla frosting off the marble and dropped it into the vial.

"What are you looking for, Doctor?" Ethan asked nervously, leaning over the table.

"Just checking for impurities, Ethan," Dr. Harris replied calmly, maintaining a soothing tone for the boy. "Nothing to worry about."

The physician pulled a small dropper bottle filled with a clear chemical reagent from his kit. He added three drops to the frosting inside the vial, sealed it, and shook it vigorously for five seconds.

The ballroom was agonizingly silent. The bright cinematic lights reflected off the glass vial as Dr. Harris held it up to eye level.

For the first few seconds, the liquid remained cloudy and white. Then, a sudden, violent chemical reaction occurred. The liquid rapidly shifted from white to a sickly, vibrant, unmistakable shade of deep violet.

Dr. Harris stopped moving. His calm, intelligent expression instantly hardened into a mask of grim realization. He looked at the vial, then slowly lifted his eyes to meet Dominic’s.

"Well?" Dominic demanded, his voice a low, dangerous growl.

Dr. Harris stood up, stripping off his gloves. His face was entirely serious, devoid of any bedside manner.

"Positive," Dr. Harris stated firmly, his voice echoing in the dead silence. "It is a highly concentrated, synthetic neurotoxin. Fast-acting. It’s designed to mimic acute cardiac arrest."

Dr. Harris looked at Ethan, profound relief washing over his features, before looking down at the tiny girl in the yellow dress. "Ethan cannot eat this. If he had ingested even a fraction of this frosting, his heart would have stopped before I could cross the room."

A collective gasp of sheer terror erupted from the guests. Elena collapsed to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably as she pulled Lily tightly against her chest, realizing the magnitude of what her daughter had just prevented.

Dominic did not gasp. He closed his pale eyes for a fraction of a second, his heavily tattooed hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. When he opened his eyes, the temperature in the room plummeted. The war had just breached his front door.
