Chapter 7 - The Silver Box Memory

The image Lily painted was vivid and chillingly professional. Dominic stood back up, his towering, muscular frame casting a shadow over the ruined cake. He processed the information with the cold, calculating mind of a seasoned warlord.
"Transdermal application," Dr. Harris murmured, stepping closer to Dominic. "The assassin used a highly concentrated powder. By rubbing it directly into the outer layer of the frosting, it would dissolve seamlessly. No needles, no punctures in the cake’s structure. It’s an incredibly sophisticated method, Dominic. This wasn't a street-level hitman. This was a professional."
"A professional who bypassed my entire external security grid, walked into my kitchens, and targeted my eight-year-old son," Dominic replied, his voice a low, lethal whisper that only the doctor could hear. "They didn't break in, Harris. They were let in."
"An inside job," Dr. Harris concluded grimly, his intelligent eyes scanning the locked ballroom. "But who? The catering staff have been vetted for months."
Dominic turned back to the tiny girl in the yellow dress. "Lily. You said the man was wearing a dark suit."
"Yes," Lily nodded. "A very nice dark suit."
"Did you see his face?" Dominic asked, the tension in the room hinging entirely on the memory of a three-year-old. "Do you know who the man was?"
Elena gasped softly, pulling Lily slightly closer. "Lily, think very carefully, sweetheart. Did you see his face?"
Lily scrunched up her rosy face, thinking hard. She looked down at her pink shoes, then back up at the towering Mafia Boss.
"No," Lily said, shaking her head. "It was too dark in the hallway. I only saw his suit and his hands."
A subtle wave of disappointment rippled through the loyal bodyguards. Without a face, they were looking for a needle in a haystack of suited men. Half the wealthy guests and all of the security personnel were wearing dark suits. The assassin could be anyone in the room, standing right next to them, blending perfectly into the elite crowd.
"It's alright, Lily," Dominic said, his voice steady, masking the intense frustration boiling beneath his calm exterior. "You did perfectly. You told me everything you know."
"I didn't see his face," Lily added, her clear voice cutting through the heavy silence once more. "But I saw the shiny thing on his jacket."
Dominic froze. The air in his lungs seemed to turn to ice. He took a slow, deliberate step back toward the child.
"A shiny thing?" Dominic asked, his American accent perfectly measured, suppressing the sudden, violent spike of adrenaline. "What kind of shiny thing, Lily?"
Lily reached up with her tiny hand and tapped the left side of her bright yellow party dress, right over her heart.
"He had a shiny gold pin right here," Lily explained innocently. "It caught the light from the kitchen when he turned around."

The grand ballroom plunged into a silence so profound it felt like a vacuum. Every single guest stopped breathing. Elena covered her mouth with her trembling hands, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror as she realized the massive, horrifying implication of her daughter’s words.
Dominic Moretti did not need Lily to describe the pin. He knew exactly what it was.
