Chapter 8 - The Mark of the Judas

Dominic Moretti’s world was built on absolute loyalty. His inner circle, the men trusted to guard his life and the life of his son, were handpicked from the most elite, battle-tested soldiers in the syndicate. To mark their status, they were given a specific insignia. A custom-made, solid gold pin depicting a falcon with outstretched wings, worn on the left lapel of their dark tailored suits.

The assassin wasn't a catering staff member. It wasn't a rival boss sneaking through the back door. It was one of Dominic’s own elite guards.

"A gold pin," Dominic repeated softly, his voice devoid of all humanity. The ruggedly handsome face was completely stripped of emotion. He was looking into the abyss, and the abyss was looking back from inside his own home.

"Yes, Mr. Dominic," Lily nodded, completely unaware of the lethal weight her words carried. "It looked like a bird."

Dr. Harris took a slow step backward, his calm demeanor finally cracking. He looked around the room at the dozen bodyguards standing at the exits, realizing that the men holding the guns meant to protect them could be the very men trying to kill them.

"Lily," Dominic said, his pale eyes burning with an intense, terrifying fire. "Take a look around the room for me. Do you see anyone wearing the same gold bird pin?"

Elena tried to pull Lily back, terrified of making her daughter a target, but Dominic raised a hand, silently demanding she let the child speak.

Lily turned her curly brown head. She scanned the massive, locked ballroom. She looked past the trembling wealthy guests in their expensive gowns and tuxedos. She looked past the shattered porcelain and the ruined cake.

Her observant eyes drifted toward the grand arched doorway leading to the service corridor. Standing exactly ten feet away, guarding the very entrance the assassin had used, was a tall, muscular security man. He wore a perfectly tailored dark suit, a crisp white shirt, and a gold falcon pin gleaming under the cinematic light of the crystal chandeliers.

Lily suddenly raised her tiny arm. Her finger pointed squarely at the security man’s chest.

"The man had the same gold pin as him," Lily said quietly.

The atmosphere in the room ignited. The accusation struck the guard like a physical bullet.

The guard’s name was Marcus. He was a trusted lieutenant, a man who had stood by Dominic’s side for over six years. The moment the tiny finger pointed at him, Marcus’s fair, rosy skin turned a sickly, ashen pale. A bead of cold sweat broke out on his forehead.

"Boss," Marcus stammered, his American accent cracking with sudden, violent panic. His hands instinctively twitched toward the lapel of his jacket. "The kid is confused. She’s just a baby! I've been standing guard at this door the entire party. I never stepped foot in the kitchen!"

Dominic did not shout. He did not draw his weapon. He executed a slow, calculated turn.

The physical movement of the Mafia Boss turning to face his traitorous guard was cinematic in its terrifying restraint. Dominic’s thick dark hair shifted slightly as he locked his intense, commanding gaze onto Marcus. The open collar of his white dress shirt exposed the dark tattoos that seemed to pulse with his restrained fury.

"Don't move your hands, Marcus," Dominic whispered, a low, lethal command that paralyzed the entire room.
