Chapter 1 - the head table

The grand ballroom of the Bellacorte estate glistened under crystalline chandeliers. Over two hundred syndicate capos, politicians, and high-society elites filled the mahogany tables, their quiet conversations drowned out by a live string quartet. It was the thirty-year anniversary of the Bellacorte syndicate, a celebration of absolute power.

At the centerpiece head table, Marcus Vale sat comfortably in the high-backed leather chair reserved exclusively for the Don.

Marcus wore a luxurious charcoal tuxedo, his silver-streaked hair neatly styled. Beside him, his wife Vivienne Vale stood in an extravagant crimson evening gown, her diamond earrings catching the warm light. Marcus casually reached out, picked up Dominic Bellacorte’s untouched glass of vintage red wine, and raised it toward the silent room.

"From now on, this empire is mine," Marcus said, his voice echoing over the quieted crowd with a cold, mocking smirk.

The surrounding guests watched in frozen terror. Nobody moved. Nobody dared to toast.

The heavy double doors at the back of the hall slammed open.

Dominic Bellacorte stepped into the banquet hall. Broad-shouldered, battle-hardened, and imposing in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, the legendary Mafia Don moved with frightening calm. His polished leather shoes clicked against the marble floor as the entire room fell dead silent.

Dominic’s icy grey eyes swept across the room, locking directly onto Marcus sitting in his seat.

Dominic didn't utter a word. He didn't raise a weapon. He simply walked down the central aisle, his expression an unreadable mask of stone.

As Dominic approached the head table, Vivienne calmly reached into her velvet clutch, pulled out a gold-stamped document, and set the sealed alliance agreement down beside Marcus’s plate.

"Half of the leaders under your command have already chosen him," Vivienne said, her voice cold, measured, and arrogant.

Dominic stopped directly in front of the table. He didn't look at the paper. He didn't look at Vivienne.

In one fluid, terrifying movement, Dominic reached across the linen tablecloth, grabbed Marcus by his silk collar, and yanked him violently out of the chair. Before Marcus could react, Dominic delivered a devastating right punch straight into Marcus’s jaw.

The force of the blow sent Marcus flying backward into the heavy mahogany head table. The massive wooden table split straight down the center with a thunderous crack, sending crystal glasses, silver platters, and vintage wine shattering across the floorboards.

Marcus tumbled into the debris, coughing blood onto his charcoal suit.

The room gasped, several capos instinctively reaching for their suits, but Dominic stood tall over the wreckage, his broad chest rising and falling slowly.

Marcus slowly pushed himself back up to his feet. He wiped a streak of red liquid from the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand. Despite the ruined suit and bruised jaw, his eyes burned with a low, twisted confidence.

"Kill me," Marcus sneered, his voice dropping to a low, threatening register, "and your brother will seize your empire before the night is over."

Dominic’s jaw set into hard granite. Five years ago, his younger brother Leo had supposedly died in a boat explosion off the coast of Miami.

"You're celebrating too soon," Dominic said, his voice ice-cold.

Dominic didn't look at Marcus. He looked straight toward the grand entrance of the banquet hall.

The heavy oak doors opened once more. A tall man in a dark tactical coat stepped into the light. His face was scarred, his dark hair swept back, his eyes fixed entirely on Marcus.

It was Leo Bellacorte—the brother everyone believed was buried at the bottom of the ocean.

Marcus’s smile vanished instantly, his face draining of all color.

Before Marcus could speak, Leo pulled a heavy silver pistol from his coat, pointed it directly at Marcus's chest, and racked the slide.
