Chapter 12 - unraveling the web

Dominic held the heavy iron key under his desk lamp in the master study of the Bellacorte estate.

The immediate aftermath of the graveyard discovery had sent shockwaves through Dominic's inner circle. His father was not dead. The man whose legacy Dominic had spent thirty years defending, whose murder he had avenged, had been alive in the shadows for three decades.

Dominic looked across the desk at Leo, who sat quietly in a leather armchair, staring at his hands.

"You knew, didn't you?" Dominic asked softly.

Leo looked up, shaking his head slowly. "I swear on my life, Dominic... I thought our father was buried in Westchester. Vivienne told me five years ago that Moretti killed him."

Dominic stepped over to the wall safe, inserted the iron key recovered from the empty coffin into a hidden keyhole beneath the electronic keypad, and turned it ninety degrees.

A secret steel door hidden behind the safe panel popped open with a heavy mechanical click.

Dominic reached inside and pulled out a dusty metal document box. He set it on his desk and opened the lid.

Inside lay three original land deeds for shipping terminals in Europe, a stack of private bank ledgers from Zurich, and a sealed medical file from St. Jude's Hospital dated October 14, 1996.

Dominic opened the medical file. Inside was the original DNA analysis report conducted thirty years ago when Leo was born.

Dominic scanned the text rapidly, stopping at the official laboratory conclusion at the bottom of the page.

The report stated that Leo Bellacorte’s biological father was indeed Carmine Bellacorte—not Victor Moretti.

Dominic’s breath hitched in his throat. He re-read the line three times.

The story Vivienne had pushed, the story that had driven the entire war, was a complete fabrication created to make Dominic doubt his brother's bloodline and make Leo feel abandoned by the Bellacortes.

Dominic looked up at Leo. "Vivienne lied to the Commission. You are my biological brother, Leo."

Leo’s eyes widened, a wave of profound emotional relief washing over his face. "Then... why did our father pretend you were the only heir?"

Dominic picked up the handwritten letter sitting at the bottom of the metal box.

"Because our father didn't stage his death to protect the family," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register as he read the final lines of the letter. "He staged his death to escape the Commission after stealing fifty million dollars from the five families."

Before Leo could process the revelation, Mateo burst into the study, holding his tactical radio.

"Boss!" Mateo shouted. "Moretti’s entire syndicate just launched a full-scale assault on our Brooklyn docks! They're burning the shipping manifests!"
