Chapter 8 - the double bloodline

Dominic held his father’s signet ring under the lamp light. The gold was polished, free of dirt or aging, and the wax residue on the side was fresh.

He sat at his desk and pulled up the mansion's internal wire-monitoring system.

"Mateo," Dominic said into his comms unit. "Trace the signal from the burner phone we just recovered."

"Working on it now, Don Dominic," Mateo replied over the earpiece. "The cell tower signal originated from a high-rise building in Midtown—the Grand Regency Hotel."

"Get two strike teams ready," Dominic ordered. "We leave in five minutes."

Before standing up, Dominic felt a sudden wave of suspicion. He walked over to the corner of his suite where Maisie’s favorite teddy bear sat on a decorative chair. He picked up the stuffed animal, feeling along its spine.

His fingers caught on a small, hard bump hidden inside the synthetic fur.

Dominic ripped open the seam. Inside was a miniature wireless camera lens, wired to a high-frequency transmitter. Someone had been broadcasting live video and audio from inside his mansion directly to an external IP address.

He connected his tablet to the camera's feed frequency and ran a reverse IP trace.

The live feed from the camera was being sent directly to Suite 402 at the Grand Regency Hotel.

Dominic’s jaw set into stone. The person watching his daughter, manipulating Vivienne, and feeding fake information to Sophia was sitting in a luxury hotel three miles away.

He reached into his desk drawer, loaded a heavy custom pistol, slid it into his shoulder holster, and turned toward the door.

"Mateo," Dominic said as he walked down the hall. "If anyone approaches Maisie's room while I'm gone, shoot them on sight."

"Understood, Boss."

Ten minutes later, three black SUVs cut through the pouring rain, racing toward Midtown Manhattan.
