Chapter 1 - The quiet razor

The sprawling master suite of the Hale estate felt less like a bedroom and more like a sanctuary trapped in time. Bright cinematic video colors painted the space, but the atmosphere was heavy with an unspoken sorrow. Clara Reed knelt beside a state-of-the-art wheelchair, her neat dark maid uniform contrasting sharply with the pristine white apron tied around her waist. Her soft dark-brown hair was pulled back into a loose bun, a few strands framing her fair, rosy complexion. In her trembling hands, she held an electric razor.

Seated in the chair was Eleanor Hale. Even in her frailty, Eleanor was breathtakingly elegant. Her fair skin was pale but carried a soft, rosy flush of quiet dignity. She wore a luxurious white silk robe that draped gracefully over her thin frame. Eleanor’s serene face held no fear, only a quiet acceptance of the illness that was slowly stealing her strength.

Clara bit her lip, fighting back tears as the gentle hum of the razor filled the silent room. She moved with utmost care, shaving the last of Eleanor’s thinning silver hair. The lighting in the room was tightly directional, casting warm golden highlights on one side of Eleanor's serene face while plunging the other into velvety shadow, emphasizing her elegant bone structure with almost architectural precision.

Standing frozen in the heavy oak doorway was Bennett Hale. Tall, muscular, and intensely masculine, Bennett possessed a frighteningly calm demeanor that had made him a legendary Mafia Boss. His thick dark hair and light stubble framed a ruggedly handsome face. He wore a fitted black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to reveal dark, intricate tattoos on his forearms, paired with tailored black trousers, polished leather shoes, and a heavy luxury wristwatch. The intense tonal contrast of the hallway shadows wrapped around his broad shoulders. He was completely stunned by the scene before him.

Clara didn't look up, her voice a tearful whisper that barely broke the silence. “I’m almost finished.”

Eleanor gently squeezed Clara’s free hand. Silver strands of hair rested on the dark towel draped around Eleanor's shoulders. The older woman offered the young maid a faint, comforting smile, entirely aware of her son's towering presence in the doorway.

“Stop talking to me like I’m five,” Eleanor said softly, her voice carrying a dry, elegant wit.

Bennett watched silently, his chest tightening. He was a man who controlled everything in his empire, yet he had absolutely no control over the ticking clock of his mother’s life. As Clara finished and gently brushed the stray hairs from Eleanor's neck, a small, folded piece of paper slipped from the pocket of Clara's apron and landed silently on the thick carpet. Bennett’s sharp eyes caught the movement. When Clara finally wheeled Eleanor toward the bathroom, Bennett stepped into the room and picked up the paper. It was a bank deposit slip for an astronomical amount of money—an amount a maid could never earn in a lifetime.
