Chapter 7 - The ghosts of the past

David Reed was alive. He rushed down the stairs, his fair skin covered in dust, and pulled Clara into a fierce embrace. Bennett stood up slowly, dusting off his tailored trousers, his intense gaze fixed on David. There was no graphic violence, no blood, just the pure, cinematic tension of a family reunited in the ashes of betrayal.

"Marcus tried to have me killed a week ago," David explained rapidly, keeping a protective arm around his sister. "I've been hiding, waiting for a chance to break into the estate to get you out, Clara. Eleanor found a way to contact me."

Clara looked up at Eleanor, who was smiling faintly from her wheelchair. The older woman had orchestrated this entire convergence, using her last days to right the wrongs of the past.

"Marcus has fled the estate," David continued, turning to Bennett. "He took half your men with him. They're planning to hostile-takeover the syndicate tonight."

Bennett’s demeanor shifted. The quiet protector vanished, replaced entirely by the legendary, commanding Mafia Boss. He adjusted his luxury watch, his jaw set in a rigid line.

"Get my mother to the safe house," Bennett ordered David. He then looked at Clara. The warm, golden highlights from the emergency floodlights emphasized the architectural precision of his bone structure. "You go with them."

"No," Clara said firmly, surprising everyone in the room. The gentle, quiet maid was gone, replaced by a woman fiercely devoted to the family that had just saved her life. "I know this estate better than anyone. I know the hidden passages. You need me."

Bennett stared at her, deeply moved by her courage. He nodded once. As David wheeled Eleanor away toward the underground tunnels, Bennett handed Clara a sleek, heavy flashlight.

"Stay behind me," he commanded softly.

They moved stealthily through the dark, cavernous halls of the mansion. Suddenly, Bennett stopped, pressing Clara against the wall of the grand foyer. He leaned close, his lips brushing the shell of her ear. "If we survive tonight, Clara, you're never wearing that maid uniform again."

Before she could process the weight of his promise, the front doors of the mansion burst open, and headlights from a dozen black SUVs illuminated the foyer in blinding, chaotic light.
