Chapter 2 - The architectural precision of lies

The next morning, the atmosphere in Bennett’s private office was suffocating. The expansive room was designed to intimidate, filled with dark leather and rich mahogany. The morning sun filtered through the heavy blinds, hitting Bennett where he stood behind his massive desk. He was a portrait of imposing power, his fair, rosy skin set in a hard, unreadable expression.

Clara stood on the other side of the desk, nervously facing him. She looked impossibly small in the grand office, her dark maid uniform pristine, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.

Bennett tossed the bank slip onto the desk. The paper landed with a soft, condemning slap. He looked at her, his voice cold and terrifyingly even. “You were hired to clean this house. Then why are you caring for my mother?”

Clara lowered her gentle eyes, her thick lashes resting against her rosy cheeks. She was emotionally strong, but standing before a man of Bennett's legendary reputation was enough to make anyone tremble. She fought back the tears threatening to spill, her voice quiet but steady.

“Because she was scared.”

The simple, profound honesty of her answer seemed to physically strike Bennett. For a fraction of a second, the frighteningly calm mafia boss faltered. But before he could interrogate her about the money, the heavy office doors swung open.

Eleanor suddenly entered the office in her motorized wheelchair. She moved with a sharp, determined energy, her white silk robe flowing around her. She stopped the chair right beside Clara and pointed directly at the young woman, while Bennett turned in genuine surprise.

“That girl has treated me more like family than anyone in this house,” Eleanor said firmly, her sharp mind cutting through the tension in the room.

She reached out and took Clara’s trembling hand. Clara immediately went pale, her eyes darting between mother and son. Bennett stared at both women in absolute confusion, completely thrown off balance in his own sanctuary.

Eleanor looked up at Bennett, her serene face suddenly deadly serious. “There’s something you need to know about why Clara came into this house.”

Bennett braced himself, waiting for his mother to reveal the truth behind the massive bank deposit. Instead, Eleanor looked at Clara with deep sorrow. "Clara didn't come here for a job, Bennett. She came here because twenty years ago, your father took something precious from her family, and I promised her I would give it back."
