Chapter 1 - The marble staircase

The grand foyer of the Whitfield estate was a cinematic display of flawless wealth, bathed in bright, golden afternoon light that poured through towering glass windows. Everything was pristine, from the polished white marble floors to the sweeping curves of the dual staircase. But the perfect silence of the house was suddenly shattered by the heavy, echoing thud of a man hitting the stone.
Daniel Whitfield lay at the bottom of the marble staircase. He was a legendary figure in the city, an immensely powerful man whose calm demeanor hid a terrifying authority. Even now, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit and a crisp black dress shirt, his broad-shouldered, ruggedly handsome frame looked out of place against the cold floor. His dark-brown hair was slightly disheveled, and his luxury wristwatch caught the bright sunlight.
From the hallway, Grace Parker dropped the stack of fresh linens she was carrying. She was twenty-eight, beautiful in a gentle, unassuming way, with fair, rosy skin and soft brown hair pulled back into a neat, loose bun. Her pale-blue maid uniform and crisp white apron rustled loudly as she sprinted across the foyer. She didn't hesitate or call for the guards. She dropped straight to her knees on the hard marble beside him.
"Mr. Whitfield, don’t move. Please," Grace said, her voice panicked but remarkably clear.
At the very top of the grand staircase stood Vanessa Cole. She was Daniel’s glamorous fiancée, early thirties, radiating an elegant but calculating beauty. Her long blonde hair cascaded perfectly over her shoulders, and her luxurious pale-pink evening gown seemed to float around her. Diamond earrings and a heavy diamond bracelet caught the light. But instead of rushing to the man she was supposed to marry, Vanessa stood completely frozen, staring down at the scene.
Grace quickly pulled a clean, folded white towel from the pocket of her apron. There was a harsh, red bruise forming above Daniel’s eyebrow where he had struck the edge of the step. There was no blood, but the impact was severe. She pressed the towel gently but firmly against his temple to bring down the swelling, her other hand instinctively reaching into her apron for her phone to call the estate doctor.
Upstairs, Vanessa remained motionless for several agonizing seconds. Her fair skin was pale, her expression unreadable. Finally, as if remembering her role, she gathered the skirts of her pale-pink gown and hurried down the staircase, her heels clicking sharply against the marble.
Daniel was not unconscious. He kept his eyes half-open, peering through his dark lashes. He silently watched both women. The legendary mafia boss possessed a mind that never stopped analyzing, and right now, his quiet, intense presence was entirely focused on the contrasting reactions of the two people closest to him.
Grace stayed focused completely on helping him, her gentle hands steady despite her racing heart. Vanessa, on the other hand, reached the bottom step and stopped. She looked shaken, her chest heaving, but she kept glancing at Daniel instead of kneeling down to touch him. She maintained a strange, physical distance.
"Stay with me," Grace said, her tone urgent, leaning closer to him. "Tell me what day it is."
Daniel didn't answer immediately. His mind flashed back to an incident earlier that week. He had been standing in the shadows of the hallway, watching a scene unfold beside the kitchen island. Vanessa had been towering over Grace, her voice dripping with venom. The maid had been humiliated, her pale-blue uniform feeling like a target.
"I never said you stole it," Vanessa had said coldly, referring to a missing diamond bracelet. It was a masterclass in manipulation—destroying Grace's reputation among the staff without making a direct accusation that Daniel could investigate.
Back in the bright light of the foyer, Daniel remained entirely still. He pretended to be weaker and much more disoriented than he actually was. Grace kept gentle pressure on his forehead, her fair skin flushed with worry, trying her absolute best to help him.
Vanessa finally took a step closer, her heels clicking on the marble as she stared down at him. But she wasn't looking at his face.

As Grace leaned over Daniel, shielding him, Vanessa’s eyes suddenly darted away. Her gaze dropped with laser focus to something resting near Daniel’s relaxed hand on the polished marble floor.
"Where’s the vault key?" Vanessa whispered under her breath.
