Chapter 8 - The gathering storm

The private docks owned by the Whitfield syndicate were usually deserted at this hour, but tonight they were a hive of cinematic, terrifying activity. Bright industrial floodlights cut through the sea mist, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete.
Vanessa stood in the center of an empty warehouse, her black silk outfit blowing in the damp wind. She clutched the titanium box tightly. Surrounding her were half a dozen men wearing heavy leather jackets—the muscle of the rival Romanov family.
A tall, scarred man stepped forward. "You have it, Vanessa?"
"I have it," Vanessa said, her voice shaking slightly with adrenaline. "The complete Whitfield ledger. Every offshore account, every hidden safehouse. It's all here. This clears my family's debt entirely. That was the deal."
"Open it," the scarred man commanded.
Vanessa knelt on the concrete, her manicured fingers struggling with the heavy latches of the titanium box. She had done it. She had outsmarted the legendary Daniel Whitfield. She was going to be free, and Daniel was going to be ruined.
Just as the latches clicked open, the massive corrugated metal doors of the warehouse shrieked and began to rise.
The Romanov men drew their weapons instantly, spinning toward the sound.
The bright headlights of four black, armored SUVs flooded the warehouse, blinding everyone inside. The vehicles moved with terrifying synchronization, blocking every exit. The doors opened in unison, and dozens of Daniel's elite enforcers stepped out, their weapons raised and steady.
The Romanov men froze. They were vastly outnumbered, caught entirely by surprise.
From the center SUV, Daniel stepped out. He was a vision of absolute, deadly authority. He wore his tailored black suit, moving with a slow, frighteningly calm grace. Beside him walked Grace. She no longer looked like just a maid. Standing next to the boss, her chin held high, her fair skin glowing in the harsh lights, she looked like a woman who belonged at the top of the empire.
Vanessa gasped, dropping the titanium box. It hit the concrete with a loud clang.
"Daniel," Vanessa whispered, her elegant facade crumbling into absolute terror. "You... you were supposed to be asleep."
"And you were supposed to be planning our wedding," Daniel replied smoothly, his deep, masculine voice echoing across the empty warehouse. He walked slowly toward her, not even glancing at the Romanov thugs who were lowering their guns under the threat of his men.
"It's over, Vanessa," Daniel said, stopping a few feet away from her. "The Romanovs can't save you. They can't even save themselves right now."
May you like
Vanessa looked frantically at the scarred Romanov leader, but the man was slowly backing away, raising his hands in surrender. He knew better than to fight Daniel Whitfield on his own territory.
"Open the box, Vanessa," Daniel commanded softly.
