Chapter 3 - The bracelet illusion

The estate doctor declared Daniel fit but ordered strict rest for the next forty-eight hours. Daniel accepted the diagnosis gracefully, retreating to the master suite. The cinematic brightness of the mansion felt oppressive as a silent game of chess began within its walls.
Later that evening, Grace was in the massive, state-of-the-art kitchen, polishing silver. The pale-blue of her uniform was spotless, her white apron tied tightly around her waist. Her fair, rosy skin was pale with exhaustion. She couldn't stop thinking about the look in Daniel's eyes when he sat up on the marble floor. He had been testing them.
The heavy kitchen doors swung open, and Vanessa walked in. She had changed into a sleek, ivory silk robe, but the calculating coldness in her eyes remained.
"You're lingering, Grace," Vanessa said smoothly, leaning against the marble island. "The staff usually retires by nine. Are you hoping Mr. Whitfield will need a glass of water? Thinking you can play the devoted nurse?"
"I am just finishing my duties, Miss Cole," Grace replied quietly, keeping her eyes on the silver tray in her hands.
Vanessa stepped closer, her blonde hair catching the under-cabinet lighting. "Let's be clear about something. You might have played the hero today, but you are still the girl who can't keep her hands off things that don't belong to her. The staff still remembers the missing bracelet."
Grace's hands trembled slightly, but she remained fiercely strong. "I didn't take your bracelet. And you know that."
Vanessa offered a chilling, refined smile. "Perception is reality in this world, Grace. And in Daniel's world, a thief is dealt with severely. Keep your distance from him, or I will make sure the bracelet isn't the only thing missing from your life."
Vanessa turned and left the kitchen. Grace took a deep, steadying breath. She had endured Vanessa's psychological torment for months to keep this job and pay for her younger sister's college tuition.
What neither woman knew was that Daniel had been standing on the dark balcony overlooking the kitchen courtyard, listening through the open window.

Daniel pulled a small velvet pouch from his pocket. He opened it, tipping a heavy diamond bracelet into his palm. It was the exact bracelet Vanessa had accused Grace of stealing. Daniel had found it three days ago, deliberately tucked away in the lining of Vanessa's own designer handbag.
Vanessa was isolating Grace, trying to get her fired. But why? Grace was just a maid. Unless, Daniel realized with a frighteningly calm clarity, Grace had unknowingly seen something she wasn't supposed to see.
